On Indigenous Peoples Day, today, the Voice of Witness education program is excited to share new lesson plans amplifying Indigenous histories, experiences, and perspectives that are all too often marginalized and misrepresented in school materials.
The free curriculum centers powerful narratives from the newest VOW book,How We Go Home: Voices from Indigenous North America. These stories urge us to listen, learn, and create a world where Native ways of knowing, being, and doing are valued.
The lesson plans provide resources for teachers and students to reflect on the impacts of ongoing colonialism and and interrelated issues, including: intergenerational trauma, identity, healthcare, policing, Indigenous rights, resource extraction, and resistance. The in-depth preface for educators offers essential context and strategies for respectfully engaging with these topics and creating an open learning environment for all students.

Voice of Witness (VOW) is an award-winning nonprofit that advances human rights by amplifying the voices of people impacted by—and fighting against— injustice. VOW explores issues of race-, gender-, and class-based inequity through the lenses of migration, displacement, and the criminal justice system. The VOW Book Series depicts human rights issues through the edited oral histories of people—VOW narrators—who are most deeply impacted and are often at the heart of solutions to address injustice. The VOW Education Program connects over 20,000 educators, students, and advocates each year with these stories and issues through oral history-based curricula, trainings, and holistic educational support.
