Lt. Dennis P. Murphy
Dennis Murphy's first two volumes in his The Thin Blue Line series will be available at Maxwell soon. They can also be purchased through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
A Tale of Two Careers
a Zoom discussion with Dennis Murphy
Monday, October 26, 6-7 PM

Register here for October 26, 6 PM

After a lifetime in law enforcement on the local, state, and federal levels, Dennis Patrick Murphy turns to the realm of  crime thriller fiction to bring his experiences and expertise to the public in a new way. The Thin Blue Line series starts with CPD Blue—The Rookie Years, based on Murphy's work as a Camillus police officer. It continues with SPD Blue—Urban Policing and the not-yet-released third volume SPD Blue--Narcotics, with situations taken from his years in the Syracuse police department.

As he moved through the ranks from beat cop to detective and federal investigator, Lt. Murphy knew that he was in a position to advise young men and women who were considering a career in law enforcement. He does so as an adjunct professor at Onondaga Community College in the Department of Criminal Justice.

In this virtual gathering, Lt. Murphy will talk about both his careers. As a kickoff event to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), this gives aspiring authors the chance to get practical advice on starting, polishing, and publishing that first work. It also provides a unique opportunity for anyone thinking about becoming a cop to learn how to start and what to expect. Finally, the general public gets a look inside one of the most challenging and rewarding careers out there and the lives of the men and women who keep the community safe.

Free. Registration is required. Click here to register directly through Zoom and to receive your Zoom meeting invitation. You will need a computer, tablet, or smartphone to attend this Zoom event.

Maxwell is now open normal operating hours for browsing and computer use,
by appointment only.
We are still offering curbside services.
Here's what you need to know:

In the State of New York, facial coverings (over your mouth and nose) are mandated. Masks must be worn at all times, even for curbside pickup. If you need ADA accommodations, please call 315-672-3661 or email director@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org before you come to the library.

To make an appointment, call the library at 315-672-3661 during regular hours. Appointments left on our answering machine, email, or Facebook page will not be honored. You must speak with a staff member.

Please be patient if the line is busy. We only have one line, so please call back or leave us a message and we will return your call.

Appointments can be made every hour on the hour, for a maximum of 45 minutes. This minimizes the number of people in the building at any one time, which is a New York State requirement. It also gives the staff time to clean between appointments, for everyone’s protection.

If you are not feeling well, please call to reschedule your appointment.

All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you are late for your scheduled appointment, please be aware that each appointment ends at 45 minutes past the hour. You will not receive your full time in that case.
When you see the following message in your email--

"Library records show the following item(s) overdue. Returned items are quarantined for 7 days before checking in due to COVID-19. If you have returned them, or the item is an eBook, please excuse this notice. Otherwise, please return them as soon as possible. If you have any questions, do not reply to this email. Call your local library instead."

---PLEASE don't panic. You also do not need to contact the library about it unless more than 10 days have passed since you returned your items. As the notice states, all the county libraries must quarantine everything for at least 7 days. This means that they are not checked in and removed from your account until after the quarantine period is over. If we are closed for a holiday or weekend, that time is extended by a day or so.

We reset our computers to reflect the day and time items were placed in our book drop, so provided you returned things on time everything is good.

We DO ask you to call or email us if you notice something on your account for much longer than it should be. In that case, we will search our shelves or make some calls to try to locate the missing item. Thank you.
And library fines can be, too!
The month of October will be Food for Fines Month
at Maxwell Library.

We will waive $1 of your overdue fines for each food pantry item you donate at our library. We will bring the donations to St. Joseph's Church in Camillus for their food pantry.
The food pantry is looking for non-expired non-perishable food items and/or personal hygiene products. No clothing, please.

No fines? Pay it forward, and bring your donations anyway!

Remember that children's and young adult materials are fine-free at Maxwell.
Veterans and Active Military are excused from overdue fines,
so speak with us about updating your patron status
if you fall into this category.

Register for Monday, November 30, 7-8 PM

Please join us for Maxwell's newest book club for adults of all ages, hosted by your library staff! Together, we will choose a book, an author, or a theme and get together on Zoom to share our thoughts, impressions, and suggestions for future selections. See below for registration and reading guide information for the October and November titles.
For October, Alyssa and Rena have chosen Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. Picoult isn't afraid to tackle emotionally difficult subjects in her novels, and the balance between familial responsibilities and questionable moral decisions presented in this book will give the group much to discuss.

Read about this month's selection at https://www.litlovers.com/reading-guides/fiction/628-my-sisters-keeper-picoult
Borrow the book through OCPL or OverDrive in print, large print, audio, ebook, or eaudio, and read it by our meeting. We will reserve a few print copies at Maxwell. Call to see if one is available for you to check out on your library account.

For November (please note different day of the week), the group will read Adriana Trigiani's Very Valentine. The first book in a trilogy, this introduces the reader to the Roncalli and Angelini families as they work to save their traditional Italian-American family business from financial ruin.

Raising Backyard Chickens
A Zoom presentation with Kathy Kitt
Friday, November 6
3-4 PM

Register here for November 6, 3 PM

Marion "Kathy" Kitt grew up on her grandparents' farm in the Town of Onondaga. The property was on Vinegar Road, today known as Kasson Road, and is currently home to Kathy, her husband, and her "girls"--the flock of chickens she lovingly raises, photographs, and paints.

A talented artist, Kathy's 2018 art exhibit and presentation at Maxwell on "backyard chickening" was so well received that an encore performance was requested. Todays' interactive workshop, Raising Backyard Chickens, will be held via Zoom. A big advantage to using the Zoom platform is that Kathy will be able to bring the audience on a virtual visit of her set-up, making it easier to show and discuss the basics of starting your own flock.

Free.
Registration is required. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer to participate. Click here to register directly through Zoom
and to receive your invitation link.
Tuesday, November 17 is

Tutoring help is available through Zoom for middle and high school students, homeschool or other, from a retired teacher. Free. Email Pam at maxwelllibrarytutor@gmail.com for information and to set up your Zoom session.
To promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers as well as to encourage parent and child bonding through reading, the 1000 Books Foundation has issued a challenge to parents to read 1000 books to their children before kindergarten. Stop in at Maxwell Library to get your first reading log and informational materials, and start reading! Kids can track their progress by looking for their personalized owl stickers on the wall near the picture books.
Keep reading! Digital books count, so help your children become star readers.
Out of reading logs? You can find them here and print them at home.
DID YOU KNOW...
  • Maxwell patrons have access to The Syracuse Post-Standard, including its blog and Syracuse.com site. The content is provided by our system-wide database, Newsbank. Use this link with your library card number and PIN to gain access to online services!
  • OCPL has added a database of resources for test preparation, college and career planning, and related needs. It is the Gale Testing & Education Reference Center (TERC), and it replaces Learning Express. You can get to it through the Digital tab on Maxwell’s website or by going through OCPL’s Database page (scroll down to “T” for testing).
  • Library patrons may borrow one of three OCPL Tech Packs from Maxwell. Each kit (shown below) contains an HP Chromebook and charger, a Verizon hotspot and charger, and a quick start guide for using the equipment. For more information on lending procedures and equipment specifications, see our website or ask at the circulation desk.
Grab-‘n’-Go Printing

During the COVID pandemic, some Maxwell patrons who don’t own a printer may be reluctant to use our public computers when they need to print documents. In order to keep our printer accessible to the largest number of our patrons, we are offering a printing pick-up service.

You can submit documents by attaching them to an email addressed to printing@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org

Then call us at 315-672-3661 during the library's regular hours to schedule a time to pick your job up.

Costs

Costs are the same as for printing when you’re at the library:

  • 25¢ per side B&W
  • 50¢ per side color

You can have the charges put onto your library account, or you can pay cash (exact change, or very close to it, please) when you come to pick the print job up. Note that library policy requires us to suspend most privileges when your balance is $5.00 or more, so the largest print job we can charge to your library card is 20 sides B&W or 10 sides color.

The fine print

  • Because your submission comes to us by email, do not submit documents containing any information you want to keep secure (for instance, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and so on).
  • Best results will be achieved with files in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF formats. We can print files in many other formats, but the results may look different from what you’re hoping for.
  • We won’t print anything until you contact us. Submissions over a week old are subject to deletion.
  • Library account balances of $3.00 or more can be paid with a credit or debit card online through your library account (https://catalog.onlib.org/polaris/logon.aspx). Borrowing privileges are suspended when the balance on your card gets to $5.00 or more.
Friends of Maxwell Memorial Library

Being a Friend of Maxwell is a great way to support the library. The group sponsors library programs and fundraising events.

On the move? Stuck in a doctor's office or the mechanic's? Working out at the gym? Staying home during the NY PAUSE?

The apps are free, and the ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, and videos are easy to access on your cell phone or tablet. Get more with your library card. We're happy to help you get started!

Are you planning on visiting a New York State or an Onondaga County park? Borrow a NYS Empire Pass or an Onondaga County Park Pass from Maxwell Library before your trip. Both passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis to patrons over the age of 18 with OCPL library accounts in good standing. They may be checked out for three days, and must be returned in person at Maxwell. Call or stop in for more details. Please note that the county and state may temporarily remove some locations from the passes. You must go to their websites or call them to see current location availability.
