Fake News You Won't Want to Miss    by Eliane Dotson

People are always surprised when I tell them their map is a fake.  "But it's in a really old frame and it looks really old," they say.  "How can you tell?" they ask.  There are clues, and they are relatively easy to spot if you know what to look for on a map.  I always explain to them the clues, because my goal is to prevent reproductions from being offered on the market as originals.  It's not good for the map market.

In my line of work, it is very common to come across fake maps (also known as "reproductions"), as I am constantly receiving email inquiries from people who want to consign material with us. More often than not they simply found the map at a yard sale or inherited it, they don't have any experience dealing with antique maps, and they are looking for my expertise.  However it is not very common for me to discover reproductions being passed off as originals by reputed auctioneers.  But it does happen, and here is one story.

Gerrymandering Revisited    by Jon Dotson

The topic of gerrymandering often arises around election time, so we wanted to remind you of an article in our newsletter archive about the history of gerrymandering.

Since the article was written in 2017, there are a few updates regarding the current status of gerrymandering in the United States.  In Gill v. Whitford (2018), the Supreme Court remanded the case back to lower courts due to the failure to demonstrate personal harm as a result of the gerrymandering in Wisconsin.  In another case, Rucho v. Common Cause (2019), the US Supreme Court ruled that partisan gerrymandering could not be decided by the federal court system as it represented a nonjusticiable political question, and therefore was the responsibility of Congress and the states.

Carto-Bibliography on Franklin Updated    by Eliane Dotson

Five years ago I embarked on a project to update Ashley Baynton-Williams' carto-bibliography of maps that depicted the ephemeral State of Franklin, published in The Map Collector, Issue 72, Autumn 1995.  I initially added 10 new entries to his list, and subsequently have continued adding new entries, states, and editions as I have come across them, assisted by Franklin collector Kenneth Baker.  There are now 35 entries representing separately engraved examples!

We have again updated the list with one new entry (#21a), which is a different edition of von Zimmerman's map of the United States.  We have also made updates on entries #14a and #18.  As always, if you know of new information that should be added to the list, please contact me at eliane@oldworldauctions.com.  A link to the carto-bibliography is always accessible on the home page of our website, under the section "Learn From the Experts."
