As part of Children’s Book Festival 2020, dlr libraries are delighted to announce the launch of dlr Scéal Trail, a brand new exciting outdoor reading initiative launching Thursday 22 October, supported by The Creative Ireland Programme.

dlr Scéal Trail is an outside story walk that everyone can enjoy! A scéal trail or story walk is a book delivered in an exhibition format that you can follow, from beginning to end, as you walk with your family or friends.

Pictured is dlr Writer in Residence 2019-2020, Sadhbh Devlin, with her new book Geansaí Ottó, which will be the first book used in dlr Scéal Trail.

Divine Illumination - shortlisted for Chambers Ireland Award

dlr Libraries are delighted to announce that last year’s Divine Illumination - The Oratory of the Sacred Heart initiative has been shortlisted for the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2020 (Commemorations and Centenaries). We want to thank everyone who assisted with the project and those members of the local community who shared their memories and stories of the Oratory and the Dominican Convent in Dún Laoghaire. The project consisted of a new publication, new exhibitions at dlr LexIcon and the Oratory and an extensive series of workshops, talks and a seminar.

We have recently added the exhibition at dlr LexIcon to our list of available online exhibitions and you’ll find a link to the virtual tour of the Oratory, organised by dlr Heritage Office on the same page. Watch this space for 2 further short videos celebrating the Oratory including one about the new mural created by pupils from Dominican Primary School in the grounds of the Oratory, completed on 7 October 2020.

Depicting Diversity

"Difference is the essence of humanity. Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict. Therein lies a most fundamental principle of peace: respect for diversity". – John Hume

Calling all Primary School teachers of 4th-6th classes in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown! We have an exciting new opportunity for you to take part in workshops and an art exhibition. This project which is funded by Creative Ireland arose out of the Black Lives Matter movement with dlr Libraries working in close partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland with additional resources from Children’s Books Ireland. The project was conceived and co-ordinated by artist Mags Harnett and the final artwork from the workshops will be a playful exhibition (onsite and online) that will celebrate diversity. It is also linked with the Primary School Curriculum and explores the SPHE strand on self-identity and relationships with others.

Each participating school will receive a pack which includes books and art materials from dlr Libraries and resources from the National Gallery of Ireland and Children’s Books Ireland.

Booking essential by emailing dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie
As we expect an enthusiastic response to this callout, we will be selecting schools on a first come, first served basis, 1 class per school. The workshops (in 2 parts per class) will take place between early November and mid-December.

Disinformation, Fake News and Privacy - are you Media Literate?

What happens when we increasingly rely on social media and the web for nearly all our information? THE GLASS ROOM: MISINFORMATION EDITION is a new exhibition on data and privacy created by Tactical Tech and promoted by The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. It explores how social media and the web have changed the way we read information and react to it. We hope that you may come into dlr LexIcon to see it once Public Health guidelines permit but in the meantime, you can visit it online here.

We have an exciting series of webinars, workshops and videos lined up to promote this exhibition led by Ricardo Castellini da Silva and curated by Jake Rowan Byrne @ MetaTech - EdTech Solutions.
Our first webinar is on Wednesday 28 October at 1.00pm entitled Disinformation and COVID-19.
Free event, register here.

Tuesday 3 November 2020, 7.00pm
Free event, book on
Eventbrite

Dr Kieran Craven of Geological Survey Ireland will talk about how the CHERISH Project is assessing the impacts of climate change to coastal heritage sites. Using a combination of techniques from the sea onto the land (and even space!), the CHERISH Project is a 6-year European funded project started in 2017. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of the impacts of climate change to coastal sites.

Working in counties Dublin, Wexford, Waterford and Kerry, it monitors and records coastlines, and assesses change to shipwrecks. In Dún Laoghaire, work has been conducted on Dalkey Island and within Dublin Bay. Register now to hear this short talk followed by Q&A.
