First Ever Ratings of Congress On Combatting Sex Trafficking

U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking Releases First Ever Ratings of Congress On Combatting Domestic Sex Trafficking

All 535 Members of Congress Graded On Their Commitment To Protecting America's Children

Washington, DC - Today, the U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking (USIAHT) released the first of its kind rating systems for members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, to hold members accountable for improving or impeding the federal response to combatting sex trafficking in the United States.

USIAHT measured votes, sponsorship, and co-sponsorship of legislation to provide resources to federal, state, and local law enforcement, victim service providers, and non-profit organizations. USIAHT graded all 535 members of Congress on their record to actively combat sex trafficking, raise awareness of this nationwide epidemic, and provide safe environments for victims.

"No other organization working to combat domestic sex trafficking has graded members of Congress on their commitment to eradicating trafficking here at home," said USIAHT Chairman Kevin Malone. "We actively engage members of the House and Senate on ways to fight this scourge, and we demand more than just rhetoric on protecting children from predators, we demand solutions.

The grading system holds federal officeholders accountable for their actions guiding the federal response to combatting domestic human trafficking, and serves to educate the public on how their federal elected officials perform in the fight against sex trafficking in the United States.

"Upwards of a million innocent American children are systematically raped and abused for profit every year, and Congress sits in a position to enact policies to assist us in this fight and we expect them to act," added Malone. "If members are committed to protecting children, this scorecard will reward those members, but members who have failed to act should be held accountable by voters."

The inaugural Congressional Scorecard includes an A-F rating system based on sponsorship and co-sponsorship of anti-trafficking legislation, procedural votes on key anti-trafficking initiatives, and final votes on crucial legislation as identified by USIAHT.
