Respiratory Protection During Harvest

The nice weather has been great for making progress on harvest, but the dry crops and mold are a concern for respiratory health. ISU Extension and the Ag Health and Safety Alliance have partnered to provide some resources and alternative options to disposable facemarks. Click here for a video and list of resources.

Fall SCN Sampling

Did you know that 70% of Iowa fields are estimated to be infested with Soybean Cyst Nematode? Did you know that 30% or more yield loss can occur from SCN with no above-ground symptoms? Now is a great time to sample for soybean cyst nematode.  Check out this "how-to" article. Fall is a Great Time to Sample Fields for SCN- Especially in 2020

Fall Applications of Anhydrous and Liquid Swine Manure

The early harvest and beautiful fall weather have caused folks to be ahead of schedule with fertilizer applications. One concern is anhydrous application in dry soil. Dr. John Sawyer shares the science of anhydrous applications in less than ideal soil conditions, including dry soils in this article Anhydrous  Ammonia Application in Dry Soil.  Also, as a reminder, we don't want anhydrous applied when soil temperatures are above 50 degrees.  Wait until soil temperatures are 50 degree and continuing to cool.  You can find the 4-inch soil temps at http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/NPKnowledge/soiltemphistory.html

Now, about that manure.  Our recommendations are the same for high ammonium content manures like liquid swine manure. The same principles apply when it comes to conversion of ammonium-N in swine manure to nitrate.  This process can happen fairly quickly in warm soils. While it has been dry, precipitation will leach the nitrate making it unavailable for crop use.  I understand that the weather is nice, soil conditions are good and our memories of the past two falls linger heavily and no one wants to battle the weather to apply manure, but give it some consideration as to how to best manage those nutrients and protect water quality.  Using stabilizers will help, but they are also short-lived in warm soil conditions.

Cooling Grain

The cooler weather predicted for later this week will offer a great opportunity to cool grain in storage.  Check out the article Cool Stored Grain Now and it's associated resources for more information.

CropsTV! Coming soon to a device near you!
For 2020-2021 CropsTV webinars will replace the annual Integrated Crop Management Conference and the Crop Advantage Series winter extension meetings. CropsTV will provide the convenience of viewing at home, office or anywhere there’s an internet connection. Live webinars will still allow interaction with specialists, presenters and panelists. On-demand viewing of topics allows schedule flexibility. Participants can select from over 30 topics from ISU faculty and staff as well as invited guest presenters.

The 10-week program launches Dec. 1, 2020 and continues through Feb. 4, 2021. Live webinars are scheduled each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9-10 AM. Recordings of previous webinars as well as additional topics will be available for on-demand viewing throughout the program. Webinars will be a combination of live presentations and pre-recorded content with a live question and answer session allowing interaction with presenters.

While CropsTV replaces the Integrated Crop Management Conference and the Crop Advantage Series for this winter, these two programs are scheduled to return next year. CropsTV was developed to reach this audience conveniently, safely and effectively during the current COVID-19 concerns.

Registration for CropsTV is $45 and includes all live webinar broadcasts, on-demand viewing of previous webinars and over 30 CCA credits. Online registration opens mid-November 2020.
