1) Help Distribute for the Purple Ribbon Campaign / Aidez à la distribution pour la Campagne du ruban violet

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women has adapted the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Violence Against Women. Purple ribbons and cards will be replaced this year by badges, available by request for contactless pick-up.
And of course, if you have one, we encourage you to wear your purple ribbon from years past with pride and conviction!
Wear your purple ribbon during the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (November 25 to December 10, 2020) and keep it for PEI’s Family Violence Prevention Week (February 14 to 20, 2021).
The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women asks allies and supporters to help distribute the badges within their communities in support of survivors of gender-based violence. Distribution begins after Remembrance Day. Please contact the Advisory Council to request your badges.

Dense Breasts Canada is committed to raising awareness of the risks of dense breasts and advocating that all Canadian women be directly informed of their breast density. We have updates on what's happening in our provinces.
Dense Breasts Canada is also committed to raising awareness about the dangers of Canada's breast cancer screening guidelines. Along with some of Canada's leading breast cancer experts, we're advocating that the current guidelines be revised because they put Canadian women's lives at risk. 4) Applications Open for Grants to Help Stop Violence Against Women

(News, October 15, 2020)
Community organizations can apply through the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat for funding to enhance awareness, education and action to prevent violence against women in Prince Edward Island.
The annual fund of $50,000 supports projects that focus on the prevention of violence against women across the province. Applications can be submitted at Violence Against Women Prevention Grant by November 2, 2020 at 4 p.m.
“Violence against women and girls affects all members and sectors of our society, either directly or indirectly. Our government is committed to preventing violence against women and girls, and collaborating with community organizations to support their work is one of the most effective ways to help put an end to violence in our communities.”

5) PEI Women’s Institute Fundraising for Food Security
|
|
On Saturday, October 17, the PEI Women’s Institute Board (PEIWI) is bringing awareness and fundraising efforts to world-wide food security through an international virtual walk.
PEIWI will be highlighting their membership with the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), and three UN recognized occasions; International Day of Rural Women, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty; and World Food Day through its annual ACWW Women Walk the World event. The overall aim this year is to bring attention to global food systems by using a promotional theme of Will Walk For Food.
Participants from across PEI are invited to walk, submit pictures and promote the event using #WillWalkForFood online or by sending to PEIWI at wi@gov.pe.ca for further circulation.
As this walk is world-wide, the walks will be real, and the globe will be connected virtually to bring attention to global food security. WI members may be spotted throughout the day at three locations on PEI including Confederation trail in Montague, Victoria Park in Charlottetown, and the boardwalk in Summerside. To adhere to provincial and Canadian health office guidelines in avoiding crowd gathering, participants are asked to use any location of their choice and adhere to distancing directives.

Ten Days for Transit PEI: Public transit is for us all.
For the month of October, we will be leading a community conversation around social justice in public transit. From October 19th-28th, we will be encouraging Islanders to take the bus and to tell us about their experience using the public transit system in PEI.
On October 24th, we will partner with T3 Transit to provide free bus tours. Bring your family and friends to learn about the bus system! The bus tours will cover many of the bus routes in Charlottetown.
Meet at the Charlottetown Mall bus stop (670 University Ave.) at your selected tour time.
We believe that public transit must be accessible and inclusive. This means that people using wheelchairs or pushing strollers can get on and off, that people with visual or auditory impairments can easily use the system, that the schedule is comprehensive and easy to understand, that the whole system is well-promoted, and that it feels safe to use. Safety and reliability of public transit services is a social justice issue. We value considering the needs of individuals for whom using public transit is made more challenging due to past histories and current experiences of trauma, mental health struggles, and disability. We also recognize the interconnectedness of all barriers to accessing public transit. An accessible and inclusive public transit system must serve all people living in Epekwitk (so-called PEI), including those in rural areas.
A truly public transit system must have a guiding body that includes the lived experience of a diversity of public transit riders. The system must include a mechanism for riders (and potential riders) to easily register their transit needs and feedback. It must feel publicly owned and administered.
Our goals:
1. To hear from and engage diverse Island communities about their public transit needs and the barriers they experience;
2. To reframe the conversation about public transit to centre it around social-ecological change; and
3. To determine and take the next step(s) for a new wave of rural-urban public transit advocacy based on the principle “nothing about us without us”.
A project of: Cooper Institute, PEI Council of People with Disabilities, PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI.

The Policy Centre for Victim Issues at the Department of Justice Canada is pleased to announce that Victims and Survivors of Crime Week 2020 (Victims Week) has been rescheduled to November 22-28, 2020. In light of COVID-19, Justice Canada will be hosting a virtual event to launch Victims Week 2020, in lieu of an in-person federal symposium.

14) Project Looking to Connect with Immigrant and Refugee Women
|
|
 The Violence Against Women Migrants and Refugees: Analysing Causes and Effective Policy Response project (https://smu.ca/gendernet/welcome.html) is looking to connect with immigrant and refugee women who may be interested in sharing their experiences -either first hand experiences, or speaking more indirectly about the experiences of people they know. By sharing stories with us, we hope to better understand experiences of violence against women, the strategies women employ to prevent violence and deal with its impacts, and how services that support migrant and refugee women can be improved. Interviews will be done remotely (either over phone or video conference). We are able to provide interpretation services as needed and are also offering a $30 gift card as compensation to interview participants.

16) An Update from Anderson House
|
|
Anderson House/PEI Family Violence Prevention Services have staff on hand at all times to help those impacted by family violence. While we have reduced our activities and put limits on much of our operation, we are still open and able to help. We know in times of crisis abuse can often worsen. If you or someone you know needs help, phone our crisis line at 902-892-0960/1-800-240-9894. This number is toll-free, anonymous and confidential. We are here for you.
Anderson House is still accepting new residents, however they will be screened and new guidelines for keeping the shelter residents and staff safe are in place. Outreach is also still available and if you call our crisis line we can connect you with services in your area.
