How to write an amazing UCAS statement

Writing a great UCAS personal statement isn't just a tick-box exercise. With so many uni applications to sift through, putting together a great statement is your chance to add a bit of personality into your application - and tell admissions tutors why they should pick you over the next candidate.

We're here to help you write a great statement that makes you stand out from the crowd 👇

1. Show them you care

Admissions tutors want to know you feel as strongly about your chosen discipline as they do. What is it that inspires you about your subject? And how can you demonstrate that? Maybe there was a moment you realised that maths, English, geography or sociology was for you. Tell them about it!

2. What makes you different?

Admissions tutors look through thousands of UCAS statements every year - and they say their favourite applications contain something that sets them apart. What do you do in your spare time that makes you stand out - and how does that make you a perfect astronomer, medic or economist?

3. No porkies! Tell the truth...

Never lie in your application. If you're tempted to stretch the facts, imagine how awkward it will be to be caught out in your first seminar in front of your classmates. Honesty is always the best policy!

4. It's not just about the degree certificate

Are you a budding marine scientist who loves to snorkel? Or a prospective computer scientist who codes in the evenings? Tell the tutors what you do outside college that shows you love your subject. It's not rocket science (although if you're applying for physics, rocket science will definitely help).

5. Avoid the rookie mistake - check, check and check again!

Sending off a model statement full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors is a huge missed opportunity. It's easily avoided by checking yourself, then getting your friend, teacher, parent or sibling to check for you. An error-free application shows you care and that you're taking the process seriously.

KEY DATES 📅
