Postsecondary Education

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services revised their document, A Transition Guide: To Postsecondary Education and Employment for Students and Youth with Disabilities in August of 2020. Initially issues in January of 2017, this document is used to assist students and youth with disabilities in achieving their post-school and career goals. Rooted in  IDEA, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973- amended by Title IV of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), both requiring that transition services are made available to students with disabilities as they prepare for postsecondary life.

The guide explores the following topics in detail:
  1. Transition planning: opportunities and programs
  2. Transition services and requirements, as authorized by IDEA and the Rehabilitation Act.
  3. Education and employment options for students and youth with disabilities after leaving secondary school; and
  4. Supporting the decisions made by students and youth with disabilities
