Our Mission
We, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, share in the mission
of Jesus by proclaiming the Good News of God's love.
Letter from the Superior General: October 2020
Dear Friend,Sister Michael Francine

As we journey into autumn, we welcome the rain, and the cooler mornings and evenings. And we are thankful for all God’s goodness to us. This has been a challenging time for all and we do not know what comes next, except that we will be faithful to our God, Church and Community.

The Sisters have a rhythm and pattern that starts each day in worship to Our Lord.  Every day, in our Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Sisters greet the day with morning prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours.  Our public and common prayer is considered one of our primary duties in the Church.   After our morning prayer, we celebrate the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Mass.  During our prayer intentions, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon pray for all of you.

To help us keep current and informed, the SSMO Community has a faith-filled team, The Liturgy Committee. Their task is to encourage the Sisters in our way of life where “liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed” and “the fountain from which all her power flows”.  Sisters strive to provide liturgical experiences that express and deepen our faith.  With that, the members use resources that are current and well tested, that help develop an understanding of liturgy.

The committee plans and prepares the environment that fosters the liturgical cycle, with attention to the seasonal and special holy day celebrations.  The Committee ensures that prayers and petitions are tracking contemporary social and church needs.

Each Sister on the Liturgy Committee brings a specialty to the planning, discussion and collaboration, hoping to enhance the prayer life of the whole community.  The Liturgy Committee decides on the décor, readings, music and special prayers.  Even though we are not singing at this time, we pray the words of the hymns with delight.

Each month the Sisters have opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, inviting various local priests to come.   The committee, in these COVID-19 days, ensures all precautions are adhered to for the Sacrament to be in administered with the utmost safety of the Priests and Sisters.  We look forward to the time when we can again open our doors to the public for liturgical celebrations especially the Eucharist.   Until that time, we live in our Christian community as women of prayer.

We remember your generosity toward the SSMO community.  The wonderful donations of fruits and vegetables have been canned!  We breathed easier with the donation of an air purifier during the smoky days!  We have received generous offers from several people to go and shop for us.  We thank you for all this and more.   We thank you in prayers of thanksgiving and gratitude and wish you all the best as we enjoy your many kindnesses.

Blessing to you all.

Yours in Christ,
Sr. Michael Francine Duncan

SSMO Campus Joins Valley Catholic to Assist Wildfire Stricken Areas

The SSMO campus joined in a donation drive effort spearheaded by Valley Catholic to assist those impacted by the recent devasting wildfires. The donation effort was targeted toward a geographic area which has special significance for the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. The Submility and Jordan area is where the Sisters' ministry was founded over 130 years ago. Some of our Sisters have family in the wildfire-affected areas.

We are thankful for our campus community and the many Valley Catholic families that stepped up to help. Read more about the effort in a story in the Catholic Sentinel on this link.

Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon: A Valiant History

The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon are blessed to worship in a beautiful chapel in the Motherhouse. In these times of COVID-19, we are learning to experience things virtually more often, so here is an opportunity to explore the chapel via video on this link.

The 2019-2020 SSMO Foundation Annual Report

What great news, that in the face of the abrupt and unpredictable events of recent months, the SSMO campus community supported so many accomplishments for the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, Maryville, and Valley Catholic School for the fiscal year 2019-20.

This issue of the SSMO Foundation's 2019-20 Annual Report consolidates a 360-degree view of a cohesive, can-do community guided by the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon's mission and vision: two critical sources of strength, especially during challenging times.

The results of your generosity are undeniable, your confidence and trust a tribute to the partnership we so gratefully share. Together, we see the big picture of the more than 130-year mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. Thank you for all that you do!
