From the Chair

Welcome to our new look newsletter “The Alert”. We’ve refreshed the format and reduced the frequency of each edition to fortnightly, but it will still offer you the great industry insights and updates you expect. Let us know what you think!

This week we discuss the latest Commonwealth Government carbon emissions report - Technology Investment Roadmap: First Low Emissions Technology Statement 2020, which I know many members will find of interest. It outlines how the improvement of land management practices across the country could see significant levels of CO₂ drawn from the atmosphere each year.

We also offer some helpful questions to those members in advisory positions, to discuss with clients when reviewing how to capitalise on and manage a low carbon future.

What's on

AIA member, Dr Lindsay O’Brien was awarded The Farrer Memorial Medal for his contribution to wheat breeding and cereal chemistry research. Kate Lorimer-Ward presented the award, at a COVID-safe ceremony on Tuesday, 22nd September at a research station in Narrabri.

His oration, “Wheat Breeders Make it Happen” is available via the NSW-DPI website.

Following on from the recent Queensland division’s webinar on climate science and agriculture, John Montgomery explains that according to an Australian specialist, unless we get emissions of greenhouse gases under control, we will lose another 20% of our rainfall by the end of this century.

New report: The Future of agricultural technologies was released by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) on the 29th September. The report was commissioned by the Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel AO and examines the impacts of nine technologies on the agriculture sector
