We are so incredibly proud of VWS alum Harrison Johnston, Class of 2018.
As a post-secondary student and climate justice activist, Harrison is the embodiment of our school vision of developing socially responsible, independent thinkers able to fulfil their life tasks and contribute to world renewal.
Harrison is known throughout the VWS community for his depth, creative point of view, and engagement. Even after graduating, he continues to be a willing volunteer at our school, notably as a chaperone for the fall wilderness trip to Manning Park in 2018, the Grade 11 year-end trip to Salt Spring Island, and the Winter Day trip in early 2019. He even volunteered as co-assistant coach for the boy's soccer team last fall, along with fellow alum Emmett Van der Griend.
His bias for action has led him to leadership roles with Sustainabiliteens Vancouver and Climate Strike Canada. As a volunteer organizer and mentor, he helped mobilize hundreds of thousands of people of all ages to advocate for our shared future during the Strike for Climate in Vancouver on September 27, 2019, and he helped welcome Greta Thunberg to Vancouver in October 2019.
Harrison is part of a wave of young people who, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a climate crisis, and global civil unrest, has answered the call of "If not us, who? If not now, when?", by entering the political arena and running for office in the upcoming BC Provincial Election.
