Exams:
What exams are required for the UCSB Teacher Education Program?
There are two state requirements needed to receive your credential: the Subject Matter Competency Requirement and the Basic Skills Requirement. These are most commonly fulfilled by specific exams.
The Basic Skills Requirement measures your basic knowledge of math, reading, and writing and is most commonly fulfilled by completing the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test). However, the Basic Skills Requirement can be fulfilled using one of the five options:
- CBEST exam
- Qualifying scores on the SAT or ACT
- Qualifying scores on specific AP tests
- Qualifying scores on the CSU Exams
- CSET subtests 101, 103, 142, & 214
The Subject Matter Competency Requirement measures your knowledge of the content you will be teaching and is most commonly fulfilled by completing specific CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) subtests for your credential. The Subject Matter Competency Requirement can also be fulfilled by graduating from an approved undergraduate waiver program.

What is the deadline for Basic Skills and Subject Matter Requirement?
Provide proof of a scheduled CBEST or provide proof of completion of one of the other Basic Skill Requirement fulfillment options by February 1, 2021.
Provide proof of scheduled CSETs or completion an undergraduate waiver program by July 1, 2021.
Where do I submit my test scores?
Is the GRE required?
No, the GRE is not required for admission to UCSB's Teacher Education Program.

My Electronic Application (eApp):
Do I answer the eApp Statements & Supplemental Documents essay prompts?
No, please answer TEP-specific prompts listed beneath Statement of Purpose and Personal Achievements and Contributions in our Application Handbook. Please note that the prompts differ depending on which program you are applying to.
I don't see the "Submit" button to pay for and submit my application.
The button will appear when you have completed all required sections of the application. Keep working on your application and make sure to save each section.
Is there a way to waive the application fee?
A limited number of application fee waivers are available to those who demonstrate evidence of financial need. If you would like to apply to waive the application fee, you will need to submit your fee waiver request through the eApp at least two weeks before the application deadline (1/18/21). Please visit the Graduate Division website for more information.

What are all your requirements and how should I keep track of them?
For your convenience, we have created a Credential & Program Requirements Checklist. This checklist will help you keep track of all your state testing and other requirements that cannot be found on the eApp. You may also view our Application Handbook for more details on each required component and when they are due.
Should I have majored in Education as an undergraduate to qualify for the program?
No. What matters is that you verify your subject matter competence. We have stories of students who studied Business and became History teachers, lawyers who became Math teachers, and dance instructors who became elementary school teachers. These are educators who can explain concepts to a new learner because they think critically about how to teach themselves. Who you are, entirely, will benefit your teacher identity in the classroom.
