Dear Bateman Families & Friends,

We would like to extend a heartfelt Congratulations to Ms. Valkanas, our 8th grade science teachers, on her retirement! After over 23 dedicated years at Bateman, we want to thank her for the enthusiasm and passion she has provided so many students throughout the years. She has touched us all with her love of science and we will miss seeing her smiling face each day. We want to thank her for all of her hard work and willingness to go above and beyond for each of our kids. Congratulations, Ms. Valkanas!

Wishing her endless days with her friends and family...including her Bateman Family! Please make sure to extend your congratulations and gratitude for her many years of service to our community!

Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13th, Mr. Parsons will he transitioning into the 8th Grade Science teacher role! Mr. Parsons has taught this cohort of students for the past few years and we know he will do great things to continue igniting critical thinking and investigative skills in each of our students!

Progress Reports

How will I receive my child's progress report?
Chicago Public Schools will be mailing all Progress Reports to the addresses on file in Aspen. If you need to update your contact information, please call the main office at 773-534-5055 or email bateman@cps.edu.

How can I view my child's grades prior to progress reports?
We encourage all families to opt in to Parent Portal on Aspen to view your child's grades weekly. This helps foster clear communication between teachers, students, and parents in order to support each child's success. Please visit the CPS Parent Portal page for more details regarding your account.

Parents are also invited to Google Classrooms as a guardian to view weekly updates and view missing assignments. Please speak to your child's teacher regrading access if needed.

Go CPS Now Open!
Monday, October 12th at 9am

The GoCPS application period for the 2021-22 school year opens at 9 a.m. on October 12, 2020, and closes on December 11, 2020, at 11:59 p.m.  During this period, families can submit an application, select and rank programs and schools, and schedule any required admissions screenings, if applicable (i.e., admissions exams, auditions, information sessions, and interviews). This includes all perspective families that are outside of the Bateman Boundaries entering Kindergarten - Eighth Grade for the 2021-2022 School Year.

CPS will use spring 2019 test scores to determine tiers for 8th Graders.
During the selection process for selective enrollment and magnet schools, CPS considers each applicant’s “tier.”  Find specific details on how CPS uses tiers during the selection process here.

Tiers are determined by five socioeconomic characteristics of a child’s address and test scores from their neighborhood schools. In these calculations, CPS typically uses NWEA MAP scores from the previous spring semester. However, because the NWEA MAP was not administered to CPS students in spring 2020, CPS will use spring 2019 NWEA MAP scores instead to update the 2021-22 tiers before the GoCPS application opens on October 12.

Chicago Public Library: Reading for Change

Change begins when you hand the right book at the right time. That time is now. The Chicago Public Library Foundation is launching Reading for Change—a campaign dedicated to expanding access to racial justice literature that will engage Chicagoans in critical conversations about race.

With your support, Reading for Change will ensure that literature and education around systemic racism is widely available—without a waitlist and across age groups—to anyone seeking to read, engage, and act towards positive social change.

Read. Engage. Act.
