Hi Folks,

It’s been quite a while since I sent the last bit of text for the UCDP Web site. I’ve been working on a few extensive pieces lately, only to find that what is needed are shorter and to-the-point bits that can be easily read and shared. So here are a few…

HOW TO BE A HERO

Based on the most recent news, Democrats no longer have the luxury of thinking that all this will pass once the election is over, and the Prince of Darkness and his minions are no longer in power. They are very much dedicated to creating enough havoc as to nullify election results and keep their hold on the nation. We can keep this from happening by asserting our rights as citizens.

  1. Exercise your right to vote—try your best to do it early, by either going to an early voting center, or sending in your vote-by-mail ballot. Don’t worry about the crowds. If lines are long, bring a snack and a companion (especially SOMEONE WHO WILL ALSO VOTE).

  2. Be prepared to vote—The county Board of Elections Web site has all the information you will need.

  3. Don’t be afraid to talk politics with your neighbors. There is too much at stake to be shy about your hopes for the outcome. Invite other voters to join you at the polls; at least encourage them to vote.

  4. If you are unsure of your voter registration status, contact the County Board of Elections. They will know whether you are good to go.

  5. Pitch in—call the Union County Democratic office in Monroe. To volunteer to give whatever time you can to encourage a high turnout of voters.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

There is a good chance that some people in your neighborhood find it difficult to get out to vote, or have a problem voting absentee by mail. There are several ways in which you can help people cast their ballot.

  1. Offer to give a ride to the polls. Each polling station has a designated area for curbside voting, so voters will not have to exit their vehicles. A poll worker will be glad to assist in casting a confidential ballot.

  2. Offer to take on a chore for a voter who may find it difficult to get away to cast a ballot. An hour or so of baby sitting or grocery shopping is all it will take to help someone to be free to vote.

  3. Place a notice on your “Next Door” community Web site that your services are available for transportation or chores.

Volunteering Opportunities
Information from Claudia Sandoval

We are still in need of poll greeters at all early voting locations! Poll greeting is where volunteers hand out slates with all the Democratic candidates on it. There are many more races on the ballot than the presidential race and these slates help candidates know who to vote for in down-ballot races.

If you've never done it before, no worries, we'll be happy to go over the ins and outs of the experience with you. There will be a virtual training class and we'll be requesting everyone wears a mask during their shift. We'll also have procedures in place so that the effort can be done without direct contact with others. Safety is our goal!

If you're interested, you can sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSecRt_nnjQI6-GI-7CvF9X6NsNu74-OvdV8_-sj5-ElKH59dQ/viewform or contact Claudia Sandoval at csandoval.nc@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you as this is our last big push to make sure we turn North Carolina blue this election!

Information from Michael Metelski

This year Michael Metelski will be coordinating our efforts to make sure our candidate’s signs are seen at the polling locations. Organizing the signs for our eight early voting locations is already well underway.

However, in order to place signs at the polls for the general election, we are going to need a massive effort by our entire UCDP family. Volunteers will be needed to help assemble the signs and sort them into precinct bundles. We will then be looking for our precinct chairs to pick up those bundles and place them at their precinct polling locations. If a precinct chair is not able to pick up or place their signs, please let Michael know and also do your best to designate another person to handle this very important duty.

No Knock / No Contact Canvassing Opportunity!

Volunteer to drop off candidate and early voting information at voters' homes.  You will not knock on doors or talk to any voters, simply drop off (while wearing your mask) brochures at the doors of voters in your neighborhood and move on to the next home.  You can do it whenever it is convenient for you, at your own schedule!
