Walgett Weir

Work on the Walgett Weir is progressing well with completion prior to Christmas. The weir has been raised by a further 1 metre which will ensure water security for Walgett residents for more than 1 year and this is based upon current consumption rates. Raising the weir by 1 metre substantially increases the length of the weir pool to extend many kilometres upstream General Manager Mike Urquhart said.
We are also fortunate the weir upgrade includes a 30 slot fishway to allow fish to continue upstream as they did prior to the weirs being constructed. Mr Urquhart also said the two (2) weirs at Walgett were the second highest priorities as barriers to fish passage within the Murray Darling Basin, however, with Walgett’s improved drought security resolved with the raising of weir 11A on the Barwon River, weir 10 located on the Namoi River can now be removed, and the removal is scheduled for October 2020.
Mr Urquhart advised the upgrade to weir 11A on the Barwon River and removal of weir 10 on the Namoi was funded by the NSW Government under the Restart Water Security for Regions Program at an estimated cost of $8.9 million.

Council is exhibiting a planning proposal under the provisions of Section 3.34 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
