WELCOME

Next meeting: Friday, October 23rd, 10 am

Greetings and welcome to MiCCA's second issue of our monthly newsletter! As you can see, the format has changed slightly, but the content is the same! Once again, please reach out with any ideas, or feedback. Happy reading!

Announcements

A reminder that meetings will be held the fourth Friday of every month– this month that's October 23rd. Looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it. Zoom line here.  Meeting password: 123.

In order to grow, we’d like to start reaching out to other Michigan health professionals who might be interested in joining our cause. We have one volunteer, but of course this is not a one person job, so please email Lauren if you’re interested in helping out with the new recruitment committee. Any level of time commitment is welcomed and appreciated! Thank you, Annelle, for being the first volunteer in this effort!

Another way we’re picking up steam: MiCCA will be hosting our own webinar in the coming months. Larry Junck has agreed to speak. More information on this coming soon.

The American Lung Association is looking for volunteers to "participate in a video of healthcare providers urging their communities to get vaccinated against the flu, and when it’s available, against COVID-19". A script will be provided to anyone interested. Email Lisa for more information.

Discussions have begun with Emily Johnson, fourth year medical student at U-Mich, who is developing a rotation on the health impacts of climate change. Nan is overseeing the project. Lisa will be leading a 4 hour advocacy workshop for the students. We welcome additional help!

The purpose of this newsletter is to keep us on the same page between meetings and serve as a resource for this community. If there is anything you would like to include (upcoming events, a riveting climate health article, or something to add to the announcements), please do not hesitate to reach out to Lauren or submit suggestions to this google form.

Spotlight: Larry Junck

Dr. Larry Junck is a neurology professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has generously agreed to share his passion for education and research with the group; Larry developed an evidence-based discussion on air pollution and its health impacts that he will be presenting in the near future. Larry was also interviewed on behalf of MiCCA and the Consortium in this article published by Second Wave Media. His contributions also include authoring the MSMS resolution on climate change. Thank you, Larry, for all your work and we look forward to hearing you speak!

Educate

In recognition of Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, Oct. 12th, here are some articles discussing the intersection between Indigenous communities and climate change. The articles below highlight the ways in which the health of Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by climate change and also speak to the incredible knowledge and activism put forth by Indigenous communities that must be heard and incorporated in addressing the climate crisis.

Article by the “Lakota People’s Law Project”, spotlighting Indigenous climate activists to follow throughout the year.

Tribal Public and Environmental Health Think Tank on Health Priorities- see especially the section titled, “ What You Can Do”, which provides guidance for non-tribal partners.

U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit: Tribal Nations, describes the threat of climate change on traditional ways of life and provides "Guidelines for Considering Traditional Knowledges in Climate Change Initiatives".

Here's an example of one impact of climate change on Indigenous health in the Great Lakes Region, as well as scholarly articles on the same subject.

Empower

Our social media accounts are up and running! Please throw us a like or follow on the following accounts. Sharing something –such as the "Letter to Candidate", pinned on our Facebook– that we’ve posted would also be a great way to amplify our outreach!

Use this google form or email Lauren if you'd ever like to submit anything to be featured on these accounts.

Engage

Sign on to the "Dear Patient Letter" (linked) and then share with other health professionals! People are already voting, so this is time sensitive! Share as soon and as widely as possible.

Reminder that the letter is embargoed until the press release in early October - please do not share on social or traditional media at this time.

This Month's Checklist

Friday Notes Summary

See last weeks full agenda in the rolling notes

1. We're still looking for volunteers for  Health Voices for Climate Action. Here’s Lisa’s video for an example. Here’s the link to the drive to upload to. Further instructions can be found in last week’s agenda in the rolling notes.

2. There were 3 action items from last week listed here, links included:

  • ALA health professional sign on letter to the EPA: We need your help to send a message to EPA. Please take a minute to tell EPA that it needs to protect the health of the patients and communities you serve by strengthening the standards for ozone pollution to no higher than 60 parts per billion. Sign here

  • Health Professionals Climate Declaration in support of carbon fee & dividend: sign here.

  • Dear Patient Letter authored by Climate Health Now. Please spread the word to colleagues, but remember it is embargoed until the press release in early October - so do not share on social or traditional media at this time

3. Many updates about new collaborations with Michigan based health and environmental groups including: MAFP, MI-ANA, MEC, MI-AIR/MI-HEALTH, ALA, MI-Allergy & Asthma, MDHHS, and Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA).

4. We also discussed potential topics for the Great Lakes Webinar and came to some important conclusions:

  • Enbridge pipeline: might be too up-north focused, need to make the topic relevant to the whole state.

  • Broadening to Clean Air and Clean Water (and including Enbridge pipelines might tie it all together).
