An Invitation to...

Someone has observed that we used to discuss elections every four years or two years during mid-terms, but now we experience the political divide almost daily.  Add to our highly-charged political climate the repeated comment that this year’s election is the most critical one of our lifetime.  No wonder we feel stressed or anxious? Limited in our movements and interactions due Covid-19, it is difficult to escape the competing and conflicting messages from news reports, social media platforms, advertisements, and general mail. Many of us may be invested in the outcome of this election and how it will affect us personally. Regardless of the outcome -- who is chosen to be president, member of congress, state, or local leader, I remind us that we put our faith in God, not any one person, party, or office.  We already follow a savior, who has our heart and determines our priorities in this world.

As the day of the election draws near, I invite you to join me in a 10-Day Prayer Count Down, starting Sunday, October 25 through Tuesday, November 3.  The purpose of our prayer will be for God’s peace, righteousness, and goodness to prevail throughout our nation in the days and weeks leading up to the election and after it. And that whatever the outcome, we, as U. S. citizens will work together for the common good and treat one another with honor, dignity, and respect and that we, as Christians will help model such choices with our words and actions.  Email Dale if you want to participate in this prayer exercise.

Racial and Social Justice

As promised we have created a resource link on our website to address the challenge of racial and social justice over the next few years in three distinct ways: (1) education of ourselves as a community of faith to gain a better understanding of these issues and the lives affected by it; (2) relationship building with other communities of faith that are non—dominant white; and (3) community participation in  activities that advocate for racial equity and justice.

On this link you will find current offerings of ways to learn and grow as well as future courses, programs and resources.  If you have a specific interest or want to raise a question or concern, there is a place on this site for that as well.  Please join us as we undertake this journey together to discover what Jesus would have us do.

Adult Discipleship Class

The Exodus Event with Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

Starts Wednesday, October 21 – 5:00 PM via Zoom

Why study the Book of Exodus?  One reason is that the Exodus from bondage in Egypt is God's central saving act in the Hebrew Bible, our Christian Old Testament.  In this book we learn much about the character of God, including God's name, the first Passover, the making and restoration of God's grace-filled covenant, and God's will for the covenant people as revealed in both the Ten Commandments and the Covenant Code.

This seven week class begins October 21 and concludes  December 16 (taking Thanksgiving week off).  To register, please e-mail Kent  and he will send you study materials via e-mail.

Literature Discussion Group

Led by Pastor Emily Stockert

Sunday, November 1 – 4:00 PM via Zoom

Our spotlight on contemporary Black authors continues as we read and discuss Loving Day by Mat Johnson. A New York Times Notable Book, Loving Day is a “frequently hilarious, surprisingly moving story about blacks and whites, fathers and daughters, the living and the dead, [that] celebrates the wonders of opposites bound in love.” Loving Day is a candid, satirical look at complex family relationships and racial identity set in a decaying, potentially haunted mansion (we timed this reading just right for Halloween!) Please note that this book contains subject matter that some readers may be sensitive to including language, drug use, supernatural phenomena, and adult situations. Sign up here.
