Springtime blooms in the Botanic Gardens 


Now we are well into spring, our natives are certainly showing off their colours!
 
Here are just a few of our locally occurring natives that have been flowering in the last few weeks
  • Phaius australis, commonly known as the Swamp Orchid. 
  • Syzygium wilsonii, commonly known as the Powderpuff Lilly-Pilly  
  • Graptophyllum ilicifolium, commonly known as the Mount Blackwood Holly  
  • Cordyline murchisoniae, commonly known as Murchison’s Palm Lily  
  • Guioa lasioneura, commonly known as the Silky Tamarind

Weed removal on the Lagoons

 
We have had a weed harvester working in the Eulamere section of the Lagoons over the last month to remove a large amount of water weeds.

This work is part of an ongoing project to de-silt the Lagoons which will improve the long-term health of this important ecosystem.

Do you love natives as much as we do?

We currently have the Mount Blackwood Holly and a selection of other native favourites for sale at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Information Centre. Prices range from $3 to $10 each and are selling fast!

The Botanic Gardens Visitor Information Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (except public holidays). 

Families sprung into the gardens these school holidays 


It was great to see so many families visiting the gardens these holidays.

The weather has been just perfect to get outdoors and explore!

We are happy to let you know that our self-guided Botanic Explorers Hunts will continue to be available after the holidays and will be made available to print from our website.
 

Botanica 2020 ‘Voyage of Botanical Discovery’ 


Just over 250 years ago, a ‘Voyage of Botanical Discovery’ occurred!

The Botanica 2020 ‘Voyage of Botanical Discovery’ exhibition by Mackay Botanical Art Interest Group (BAIG) will be available for viewing until Sunday, November 1 at the Lagoons Gallery within the Botanic Gardens Café.



 

Birdlife Mackay monthly surveys


Birdlife Mackay hold monthly bird counts in the Botanic Gardens to assist in monitoring the status and trends of bird numbers in the region. If you are a keen birdwatcher, we would love your help!

Birdlife meet at the Lagoons Viewing Deck (next to the café) in the Botanic Gardens on the last Friday of each month at 6am. 

Upcoming surveys will be held on:
•    Friday, October 30
•    Friday, November 27.

Native Plants Queensland – Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) Mackay branch promotes and propagates native plants from our local region. 

SGAP hold monthly meetings, propagation groups, plant sales, planting bees and more. New members and visitors are welcome to attend their monthly meetings.

The October Photo Walkabout will be led by Leigh de Wit from Birdlife Mackay with a focus on capturing photos of our local birdlife.

  • Meet at the Lagoons Viewing Deck next to the café.
