ALIA's Australian Public Library Alliance (APLA) is partnering with the Australian Digital Health Agency and the State Library of Queensland to deliver free online training to support library staff in responding to queries about government digital health programs. Public library staff, health library staff, as well as interested staff and volunteers from community groups and organisations can register online now. For more information, see the ALIA website.

School libraries play an integral role in the education and wellbeing of students, which is why ALIA is celebrating International School Library Day on 20 October. This day celebrates all the amazing work of school library staff and the positive impact they have on their students, schools and community. Additionally, the folks at the Students Need School Libraries campaign are seeking blog submissions from people who are curious and/or wild about school libraries. They are taking both text and photo submissions, and you can learn more on the website.

ALCC | 7 October 2020
Following last week's Federal budget announcement, the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee (ALCC) has welcomed the allocation of $22.9 million in additional funds to support Australia’s national cultural institutions. ALIA is a founder member of the ALCC.

Public library news
In Victoria, Yarra Plenty Regional Library is hosting its annual Booklovers Festival from 8-18 October and it released its Writers Festival Toolkit to help other public libraries host their own festivals; and Wangaratta Library assisted in sending more than 100 care packages to isolated seniors across the city. Also in Victorian, nine regional librarians became Science Champions in their local communities. In NSW, Mosman Library Service is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary in December with online activities. In WA, Fremantle Library has teamed up with St Patrick’s Community Support Centre to support vulnerable people facing homelessness. Lastly, library supplier James Bennett is assisting libraries with its Sustainability Project so that weeded books can find an appropriate second home.

State and National library news
Catch up on the National Library's annual Seymour Biography Lecture. The State Library of QLD has launched its special podcast, Dangerous Women. The State Library of NSW is celebrating CBCA's Book Week. Applications are open for the History Council of South Australia Fellowship, which is supported by the State Library of South Australia. Library and Archives NT has a new digital platform which improves access to and supports the discovery of Northern Territory historical collections.

The University of Sydney Library has been gifted several rare books, a 1616 first edition of Ben Jonson's Folio and several novels and short stories of William Faulkner in first editions.

Research undertaken by the CSIRO has revealed that the coronavirus which causes COVID-19 can live for up to 28 days on surfaces including touch screens. This information is available on the ALIA webpage: resources for libraries.

StoryBox Library is running its inaugural Librarian Storyteller of the Year Award. Library staff are invited to submit a 30-60 second storytelling video with the opportunity to win a number of prizes. Entries close 30 October 2020.

International library news
Listen to the LIANZA panel talk, Libraries looking forward. The discussion featured Christine Mackenzie, IFLA, President; Marie-Louise Ayres, Director-General, National Library of Australia; and Jane Cowell, CEO, Yarra Plenty Regional Library, among many other speakers. A library book has been returned to Middlesbrough Central Library in the UK 57 years after it was borrowed. The Library of Congress US has secured the archives of the National Woman's Party. In Canada, Ottawa Public Library is working to scrap fees for overdue collection items. Libraries have supported their patrons through the pandemic, and BookRiot has published an article on four kinds of support. Conversations are ongoing in the Rijksmuseum and Tropenmuseum museums in the Netherlands in regards to repatriating art deemed looted by Dutch colonialists. Similar conversations are taking place in the US and the UK.

The Children's Book Council of Australia runs its Book Week every year, this year it will take place from 17 October – 23 October, the theme is 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds'. To celebrate, Story Box Library has created a collection of activities that cater for a range of age groups, abilities and interests, and are adaptable for use at home, in the classroom or at the library.

International Games Week 2020 | 8-14 November 2020
International Games Week 2020 is coming up soon! This year the week runs from 8-14 November, and ALIA is encouraging its Members to register for the week. This week is a great opportunity for libraries to introduce fun activities and raise awareness of the social and educational benefits of play. Libraries can celebrate the week by hosting either in-person (where it is safe to do so) or virtual events.
