Rainforest Scorecard

How do you measure something as intangible as innovation?

The scorecard measurement, meant to bring awareness and understanding of ecosystem issues, serves as a means to create and have ongoing dialogue around a shared cultural narrative of innovation. The scorecard is a snapshot of the ecosystem in time, describing its strengths, weaknesses, and general conditions. The outcome of the scorecard number is to drive behaviours and models of thinking which are shared ecosystem wide. An honest examination of the ecosystem’s assets will work to identify opportunities to improve the culture of innovation. There are six main areas of an innovation ecosystem to focus on: Culture, Leadership, Activities and Engagements, Policies and Infrastructure, Role Models, and Resources.

Alberta IoT announces the formation of IoT Centre of Excellence

On October 26, 2020, Alberta IoT introduced the IoT Centre of Excellence, a tech initiative dedicated to establishing Alberta as a worldwide leader in the Internet of Thing. The work of the IoT Centre of Excellence is executed through eight focused streams with the ultimate objective to drive IoT operations, opportunities, and expansion within Alberta. Stay tuned - more details to come in the following weeks.

The timing is right in Alberta for a focus on technology and innovation. Markets like Silicon Valley, Seattle, Vancouver and Toronto are getting too costly in terms of rent and talent, making it hard for firms to attract and retain the right talent. While COVID-19 has altered some of that dynamic with remote working, not every firm in the tech space thinks that is a sustainable approach. Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO, has become a vocal critic of working from home for technology firms.

Alberta, with its talented labour pool, competitive real-estate prices and great quality of life is an ideal market to grow and expand. Some in our province try to position Alberta’s future as a choice between technology and energy — an either-or. That is just not the way it is happening, nor how it needs to happen. Alberta is already home to a large number of technology success stories, and the innovation ecosystem is growing rapidly. We need to continue nurturing and accelerating this development.

Alberta is reducing the number of temporary foreign workers it hosts, but increasing efforts to attract more highly educated entrepreneurs and technology graduates. The government expects 1,350 jobs will be freed up for unemployed Albertans through reducing temporary foreign worker applications.

“We’ve reached an agreement with the federal government to refuse more than 800 labour market impact assessment applications. Positions that would have been filled by temporary foreign workers will instead be open to people in the province,” Labour and Immigration Minister Jason Copping said in an announcement. Alberta will also accept 2,250 fewer nominations through the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. The 4,000 remaining spots will only be available to temporary foreign workers already living and working in the province.

Copping called the changes a form of protection for workers who came to Alberta under either program, as the province faces a sustained unemployment rate of 11 per cent.

Alberta’s government has launched one of its previously-announced immigration streams aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and tech startup ventures in the province.

Starting today, recent international graduates from Alberta’s universities and colleges can apply for the International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream (IGEIS) to launch a business venture or startups in Alberta.

To be eligible for the IGEIS, applicants must meet certain academic, work experience, and language criteria. The government is currently accepting expressions of interest for the IGEIS, and will invite selected candidates to submit a business application.

In January, the province is set to launch the Foreign Graduate Startup Visa Stream to attract international graduates from universities and colleges in the United States, to start businesses and settle in Alberta communities.

The two streams are part of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), an economic immigration program that nominates individuals for permanent residence in Alberta. Both streams have been previously mentioned by the Alberta government, through its economic recovery plan and its 2020 budget, at the beginning of the year.

Alberta Innovates is receiving a cumulative $1.3 million investment from the federal government’s Western Economic Development (WD) regional development agency.

The new funding will go toward programming and resources aimed to help tech-focused small to medium-sized businesses adapt to a business environment impacted by COVID-19. The federal funding is being delivered as part of the federal government’s Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF). This funding is part of the previously-announced $263.7 million investment for WD to help businesses through the RRRF.

An $11.8-million investment from the provincial government will help the University of Calgary support programs designed to foster new technology-related jobs in Alberta, the UCP announced on October 23.

The province says the funding will lead to “research that will help establish Alberta as a national and international hub for quantum computing and related spinoff industries.”

Approximately $3 million was awarded to researchers at the university, through the province’s Major Innovation Fund, to aid U of C’s Quantum Alberta network.

The program specializes in quantum technologies, which are an emerging field of physics and engineering that rely on the principles of quantum physics. Quantum technologies can be used to develop highly accurate sensor technology, secure communications and computing programs.

The Alberta government is topping up its tech startup funding program by an additional $5-million.

Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) announced Monday that the Accelerate Fund would expand from $10-million to $15-million with the goal of supporting tech companies and entrepreneurs during their initial early stages. The government earmarked $175-million to AEC, a Crown corporation, earlier in the year.

The funding matches money raised through angel investing to help cover operational and administrative costs during the launch of a new business. Generally, the fund provides up to $500,000 to selected startups. The province anticipates the funding will help create more than 4,000 jobs.

“This investment is about creating jobs for Albertans, high-value jobs for Albertans right here at home,” AEC CEO Kristina Williams said. “It is also about creating a technology solution for the future. In the short run, companies funded by Accelerate Fund will create products that will help Albertans. In the long run, this is about building an economy for the future.”

The province will be giving the University of Alberta more than $6 million to fund high-tech innovation.

The money will help fund research in areas like artificial intelligence, health sciences, seniors care and advanced laser technology.

"We want to make sure we continue to provide the funding they need to do that research and development. We have one of the top institutions in the world, particularly as it relates to artificial intelligence and machine learning," said Minister of Jobs Doug Schweitzer.

AI research at the U of A's Centre for Autonomous Systems will receive $4.5 million. Officials say nearly $2 million will be used to develop a world-class facility to study the use of lasers for skin cancer treatments and remote sensing.

"Investments such as these from the Government of Alberta are crucial to ensuring that we can continue to deliver the results that Albertans have seen and come to expect from the University of Alberta," said U of A President Bill Flanagan.

According to the University of Alberta, companies formed by graduates have contributed over $330 billion in annual revenue to Alberta's GDP.

Alberta is looking to create green tech jobs by spending $50 million from the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system over three years.

The funds will go towards technologies that reduce methane emissions and increase industrial energy efficiency. Officials are hoping the spending creates roughly 230 jobs.

The province also recently announced up to $750 million for projects across the province through the TIER system and other public funding, supporting almost 9,000 jobs and pumping $1.9 billion into the Alberta economy.

In addition to reducing emissions, eligible projects must be shovel-ready. According to the province, clean energy technology projects already submitted through Alberta Innovates’ ongoing funding application process may be considered for the TIER funding.

Applications can also be sent to the Alberta Innovates Application Portal until Nov. 30 to be reviewed for the first intake of TIER funding.

Canada's oil and gas sector is an important part of Canada's economy, and workers in the sector have been significantly affected by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. By working together with the sector, the government can help it rebound, create good jobs for workers and reduce its carbon footprint.

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, joined by the Honourable Seamus O'Regan, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today announced an investment of $100 million over four years, provided through the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), to help the oil and gas sector grow, create jobs and greatly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The investment will help the Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN) accelerate the development and adoption of innovative technologies and processes that seek to lower the oil and gas industry's environmental impacts. By developing groundbreaking clean tech and emission-lowering solutions through collaboration, CRIN will support economic growth and create good, well-paying jobs, with cleaner energy from source to end use as the result.

Through this investment, CRIN aims to reduce the sector's greenhouse gas emissions by 100 megatons by 2033. This is the equivalent of taking 1.5 million cars off the road. In addition, by supporting co-op positions for post-secondary students, work-integrated learning and skills retraining, CRIN will help develop the oil and gas sector's highly skilled workforce of the future.

This project supports the Government of Canada's Innovation and Skills Plan by building a highly skilled workforce and advancing research in new foundational technology—a key component for future economic growth and innovation. It also supports the government's plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Alberta post-secondary students will have more internship opportunities thanks to a partnership between the Government of Alberta and Mitacs.

The $15-million investment will create 1,275 internships a year for three years in key economic sectors identified in the Government of Alberta’s Recovery Plan.

These include:

  •  Agriculture and forestry
  •  Aviation, aerospace and logistics
  •  Culture and creative industries
  •  Energy
  •  Financial services
  •  Technology and innovation
  •  Tourism

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization who uses funding from all levels of government to help students gain hands-on learning skills and foster growth and innovation in Canada.

“This funding will help Alberta businesses solve their innovation challenges by connecting them to top post-secondary talent so they can expand their companies, create jobs and grow the provincial economy.” Mitacs CEO John Hepburn explained.

“At the same time, these opportunities provide Alberta students with invaluable practical skills, applied research experience, and business contacts that will help them get jobs,” he added.

The Alberta government has previously supported internship with Mitacs to attract top international undergraduate students.

“This partnership supports Alberta’s Recovery Plan, and helps ensure our province has the talent and ability to get Albertans back to work, meet labour market demands, and give students important experience needed for their future.” Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides said.

Rainforest Alberta - Zoom Lunch Without Lunch

For the month of November, we will be focusing on Leadership in the Innovation Ecosystem.

Leadership roles are both assigned and assumed, formal and informal. Leaders must have a clear understanding of the motivations, experiences, and perspectives of all participants for the collective potential within the innovation ecosystem. “Big L” leaders are decision-makers typically in positions to realize the potential, convey perspectives, and rally groups to influence outcomes for innovation. “Little l” leaders are the ones who, without title or explicit authority, take initiative and make things happen at a grassroots level.

Agenda

  • November 4th: Introducing Leadership to the community and networking with facilitated questions.
  • November 12th: Featured panelists who are leadership experts, leaders in their fields, or who have been identified as ecosystem leaders.
  • November 18th: Calgary Innovation Week: 2020 Scorecard Results Report to the Community
  • November 25th: Featured panelists who are leadership experts, leaders in their fields, or who have been identified as ecosystem leaders.

Curious what's happening in the innovation ecosystem in Alberta?

Rainforest Alberta is movement, building community in the tech and innovation ecosystem in the province through opening conversations around culture, leadership, and other focus areas.

We believe Alberta is primed to be a global destination for growing your tech venture right in this province. Come to a meeting to find out why, or for more information, visit www.rainforestab.ca

Enlightened Economy Summit 2020

The Enlightened Economy Summit is a collaboration between the MacEwan University Social Innovation Institute, Net Impact Edmonton, BDC, and Roundhouse. It examines inspiration and action through the lenses of business, community, government and individuals who are shaping, disrupting, and re-imagining the world.

This year’s theme - Crisis as a Catalyst for Change - is focused on how to use this time of turmoil as an opportunity to reset and build a more sustainable future for all.

The Covid-19 pandemic has given us a unique chance to pause and reflect on what our society has been and what it could be. It has exposed imperfections in how our systems meet our collective needs. It has forced innovations that could have lasting positive effects on how we operate. It has shown us that getting back to normal (or even a “new normal”) is not good enough - we need something better. This moment should be leveraged as an opportunity to change and improve. Featuring local thought leaders with a global perspective, this summit will offer insights, examples, tangible advice, inspiration, and discussions about how to use this time of crisis to re-imagine and reinvent our society for the better.
