  One Small Step

It’s mostly easier to stay where we are, even when it’s unsatisfactory, than to make the effort to do something different. Why? Because change is often challenging and disturbing.

The 6 Core Human Needs (Anthony Robbins) include both certainty AND uncertainty. It’s about getting the balance right. Of course we need safety, security, comfort and order: but we ALSO need variety, challenge, excitement and adventure.

Humans are designed to learn and grow in response to changing situations and new information. (As we have all learned this year.) The secret is to make it as easy as possible for ourselves to avoid overwhelm. Too many new things at once easily pushes us into stress and panic: then we quickly revert to “Oh well I’ll stay where I am then”. Familiarity and comfort are a strong pull – and they often don’t get us what we want.

That’s why we call our coaching skills course “Small Steps to Big Changes”. And that’s what people achieve - by following these steps:
  • Think carefully about what you want
  • Focus on the benefits
  • Identify the drawbacks
  • Make a plan
  • Identify the first small step
  • Arrange the support you need
  • Take action and monitor the results
  • Adapt and continue.
By understanding this process and the skills needed for each stage, you can learn how to make effective changes for yourself. Then you can help others to do the same. It makes a huge difference to your life and your sense of achievement, while building your confidence and self-belief, and opening up new possibilities.

If coaching interests you, do try come to our next free no-obligation taster session: we guarantee you an enlightening hour or so.

And Finally ...

Eat an elephant one bite at a time – that’s the standard advice for dealing with a big task.
It makes sense: you start at the beginning with the first bite and keep going. And provided you keep going, you will 'eat your elephant'.

I only really got it last week though, when I managed to complete a big project more easily than expected. The revelation was to focus ONLY on the current bite as a bite, not as part of an elephant.

By all means take a step back occasionally and look at the bigger picture, but when doing a task, focus on doing the task in front of you. Not the next task, but THIS one, in front of you NOW.

What elephant-sized projects are you working on right now?
