Latin American Studies Faculty Express Concern over Research Funding Cuts in Mexico

A matter of significant urgency has developed to which we would like to draw to your attention. The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has just approved legislation to defund more than one hundred trust funds that support research and scholarship, including those in the social science and science-and-technology sectors. These trusts are essential for a variety of reasons, and their disappearance would undermine the continuity of scientific research in Mexico.

Call for Proposals: LLILAS Benson Digital Scholarship Fellowships

These fellowships provide a $3,000 stipend for a UT/non-UT graduate student or a non-UT master's-level (or above) scholar to pursue research or teaching interests in Latin American, U.S. Latinx, African Diaspora, or Indigenous Studies using the Benson Latin American Collection’s digitized holdings and digital methods/platforms.

The LLILAS Benson Digital Scholarship in the Americas Series presents Nicole D. Payntar, PhD candidate in the Dept. of Anthropology, UT Austin. In this keynote address at the UT Libraries' Day of Digital Humanities, Payntar compares how modern tourists perpetuate the visual perspectives of nineteenth- and twentieth-century explorers through scene- and object-based feature extraction, a process that would be impossible to replicate through manual labor.

This semester, LLILAS Benson hosts three events that feature distinguished alumni. Steven Dudley, co-director of InSight Crime, presented his latest book about the MS-13 on Oct. 8 (see video here).

Cristina Tzintzun, founder and current chief strategy officer at Jolt and former U.S. Senate candidate, will discuss the importance of the Latino vote on Oct. 20 (details here).

Alvaro Hofflinger (Universidad de la Frontera) and Sandra Botero (Universidad del Rosario) are organizing a discussion about constitutional change and the impact of the plebiscite in Chile on Nov. 5 (see event page).
