COVID-19 update: Community Garden closure

Unfortunately with a cluster of cases of Covid-19 appearing in Tayport three weeks ago we made the sad decision to close the garden temporarily to all volunteers and visitors until further notice. We also closed our weekly produce stall. As the number of cases is going down we will hopefully be open again very soon.

Ali will be in touch with individual volunteers about reopening and new volunteer briefing. We will also keep you updated through our Facebook and website.

A welcome addition to the volunteer team

On a more positive note, we have a new student from Dundee University who has started a placement with us.  She is called Laura and is currently in her 2nd year of a community education degree.  She is working between PLANT and the LArick centre and already has become involved in lots of exciting projects.  With PLANT she has put together a 6 week program of activities for our online Alzheimers group, and she will also work on climate action and food strands of our projects.

Despite the current situation we are always looking for volunteers to help at the garden, be involved with our projects and future events so please get in touch with Ali on volunteer@tayportgarden.org.

World Soil Day at the Winter Warmers Film Club

We think everyone needs a bit of a pick me up this Winter, with dark evenings and lockdown uncertainties ahead of us, so we are bringing back our online movie screenings for a bit of heart-warming inspiration.

On 26th of November, 6:30-9:00pm we will kick off with a look at a wonderful and mysterious world of soil for the World Soil Day.

World Soil Day celebrates the importance of our soils for healthy food, flood prevention, tackling climate and biodiversity emergencies. We are working on bringing in an exciting movie and an expert panel discussion to give us an insight into the wonderful life of soil and how we can help its regeneration here in Scotland.

Get a ticket to reserve your place now and we will be in touch once the details are confirmed closer to the date.

Tayport Apple Juice Hits a Record Year!

Over the last month, Will has been super busy processing the wonderful bumper crop of apples into the tasty Tayport Apple Juice. He’s just finished 300th pouch earlier this week - which makes for 900 litres of justice from 1500kg of apples! It looks like we will overshoot our 2018 juicing record by miles.

You can pick up the juice at the Larick and Harbour Cafe at £5 donation for a 3L pouch (or whatever you can afford). All proceeds go into PLANT and Larick projects.
If you would like to help with juicing, sales, picking or by donating your apples please get in touch with Ali at volunteer@tayportgarden.org or text Will on 07709166820.

October Podcast: Lessons from Listening to Nature

In PART 2 of our podcasts exploring how we got closer to nature under lockdown, Kaska talks to Tayport’s own John Wills about his fascination with nature sounds, his lockdown listening project and the awesome sounds of spadefoot toads, swan’s wings and Weddell seals.

You can find this and other PLANT Voices episodes on AnchorSpotify, Apple Podcasts or any other major podcast distributor.

If you missed it, you can find PART 1 in this series here.

Community Garden Growing Update

Unfortunately the Garden was closed to volunteers through October due to Covid-19. Our community gardeners, Peter and Kirsty, have been getting on with tidying up the garden and planting plenty of exciting crops for the winter and spring. Plus, they’ve just started looking into a new polytunnel irrigation system.

Read more in Peter’s blog post.

Fruit Tree Walk Update

The fruit trees and bushes are now winding down for a winter’s rest, meanwhile the hedge continues to feed and shelter various wildlife. Beneath the rose bushes are piles of “itchy coos”, spat out by the birds from the rose hips which they’ve obviously enjoyed.

The new “meadow” has now been scythed, and shortly will be planted with yellow rattle seeds which will hopefully come up in the spring, weakening existing course grass to make room for other wild flowers.

Volunteers unfortunately don’t get to hibernate and there will be a few maintenance jobs over the winter to keep it, and us, all in good shape.

If you would like to join the FTW volunteer group, message Ali at the Community Garden in the first instance (volunteer@tayportgarden.org).
Plans for planet-friendly cooking

At the Larick centre Laura is working closely with Rosie and family groups to get a cooking project started there which PLANT will also be involved with.  If you would like to know more details get in touch or look out for posters/leaflets at the Larick centre or check our facebook page.

Ali is also developing ‘Meat Free Monday’ and ‘Waste Nothing Wednesday’ cooking sessions and sharing ideas.  We are looking to put a recipe book together for the winter months so we’d like to hear about your recipe ideas.  volunteer@tayportgarden.org

Community Stories

Our community story tellers have been embracing the changing seasons.

Fraser shares an ode to beetroot with advice on pickling this versatile vegetable and a delicious recipe for beetroot hummus. He's got a few other seasonal cooking blogs up his sleeve so keep an eye out for the yummy offerings on our website!

If you fancy having a go at podcasting writing blogs or taking photos with us, get in touch with Kaska on blog@tayportgarden.org.
