Gallery News

Each year I like to take a moment to reflect on our grand opening in 1996.  Over the past 25 years, it has been an exciting adventure.  On the opening night, we had a full house with many artists in attendance, along with new clients and friends.  Each year still feels as exciting as the first. It's easy to say that I love waking up to be a part of this amazing art world each day!

At King Galleries, we have worked hard at our mission to encourage great Native art, educate people about the art form, and give artists a space to experiment and showcase their amazing talents.  It continues to be a passion, as each day I have wonderful opportunities to communicate the beauty of this art form over the phone, in the galleries, through personal email, or on our website, helping continue an extraordinary journey in art.  Thank you for making this possible!

Upcoming

As we enter into our winter season, we continue to scheduled gallery events in both Scottsdale and Santa Fe.  In keeping with current health regulations, each event will be featured online, and we will have limited in-gallery events.  However, I hope we can use both virtual and online sources to help you feel as if you are nearly in attendance.  I have also begun planning for 2021 in Scottsdale; again, we will be relying more heavily on virtual and web-based events while having gallery installations. We have been challenging artists to create some extraordinary bodies of work, which I think will be exciting for everyone!

Thank you!

It seems like each newsletter, a simple "THANK YOU" isn't quite enough.  But it is heartfelt.  We greatly appreciate the sales, notes, and calls of support and encouragement.  I have continued to make it a priority to purchase directly from gallery artists and encourage them to continue making pottery.  Your purchases help us make this possible daily, so that's a BIG thank you!

Please continue to Stay Healthy, and let's hope that in 2021 I will get to see each of you in Scottsdale or Santa Fe!   Thank you for helping us to continue our mission in trying times.

I look forward to hearing from you with any questions or suggestions.

Gallery News...
I'm very pleased to announce that Roseta Santiago is showing her paintings at both our galleries in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.  Many of you are familiar with her and her realistic paintings that capture the beautiful Native art forms and southwestern spirit. New paintings are online and can also be seen in both galleries.
I want to take a moment and congratulate Tammy Garcia on her most recent major work in clay.  This large canteen is 17" tall and fully carved and stone polished.  The designs include dragonflies and flowers.  Believe it or not, but she has been working on it for over three years!  It started with an idea and then there was the time to build, design, carve, polish, and then, of course, fire.  I love that an artist will take such a risk in time and scale and it deserves a moment of celebration when they accomplish their goal.  I'm very pleased for the past five years we have exclusively represented Tammy's clay art and a piece like this continues our excitement about she continues to grow and evolve as an artist.
Don't forget to sign up to get a notice when your favorite artist has new work in the gallery.  We have a subscription link on many of your favorite artist pages that will allow you to receive an email each time there is something new online.  The email has a photo and a full description of the original work, with a direct link to check it out on the website.  And don't worry about too much email; you can unsubscribe anytime just by clicking a link.  Click here to subscribe to the individual artist updates!  Also, let us know if your favorite artist isn't listed, we can add them in!
Can you believe it...In October 1996, we opened the gallery in Scottsdale. Many of you may even remember the space on the corner.  I thought you might enjoy a couple of photos from opening night.  On the top left, I'm with Mark Tahbo and the top right with Rainy Naha.  Below is a photo of the gallery in 1996!  Below is THE FIRST review we had of the gallery from Art Talk, just one month after we opened.  Thanks to all our amazing clients, friends, artists, and supporters who have helped make us a success for 25 years!

"Speaking of wishing people well, there’s a person I don’t need to wish well because he’s going to do quite well, thank you very much – and that would be Charles King. Now, if you flipped his name around, he would be King Charles, and that’s a more appropriate moniker . . . as in King of Native American pottery. It has been a long time since I have seen a new gallery with the were-with-all to become an instant success, but Charles is doing just that. He recently opened King Galleries of Scottsdale on Main Street, and what a jewel of a gallery. Loaded with top quality (NO JUNK) Native American crafts but specializing in pottery (which I have always loved), and because of that, I think he will be enormously successful." Art Talk 1996
It's back by popular demand...well popular request.
Our next "Sunday Sale-Day" will be Sunday, November 15
Last time we had almost 100 items on sale, so get ready!  It’s one day only.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Tonita Hamilton Nampeyo (1934-2020).  She was a granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano, a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo, and sister to Elva Nampeyo, Leah Nampeyo, Thomas Polacca, and Iris Youvella. Her son is noted potter Loren Hamilton. Tonita was famous for her traditional style of Hopi-Tewa pottery and will certainly be missed.

"Forward-thinking gallerists, museum curators, and clay artists themselves are fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Native clay arts. At the forefront is Charles S. King. Owner of King Galleries in Santa Fe and Scottsdale, Arizona.  He is considered by many to be the dean of contemporary Southwestern Native clay arts."
