Shake It Off

By Joni Ames
joniames@aol.com

There’s a lot of warfare going on out there right now. If we aren’t mindful about it, we could let things get to us. We could become depressed, or even suicidal. Or we could go the other way and become angry and hostile to others. Who does that make sense to? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

When I find things are getting “to” me really bad, I like to turn on Taylor Swift’s song “Shake It Off” really loud. I do a prophetic act of shaking things off of me. I shake my head, I shake my arms, I shake my legs - you name it! I shake it off!

It’s actually scriptural to do that, you know. Jesus told the disciples to “shake it off.” He instructed them that, if they entered towns that didn’t receive them, they should just shake the dust off of their feet and move on. Go to the next town. Leave the naysayers in the dust.

I had to have a “shake it off” time last week before I went to help out at a conference. I needed to get my hair trimmed, but my beautician was not available. I should have waited until she was. But no… I went ahead and let the girl that was there cut my hair.

I got butchered. It turned out so short that I seriously almost canceled being a part of the conference that weekend. I didn’t want anybody to see me.

I finally pulled myself together and shook it off and went. I still hated my haircut. It was shorter than some of the men that attended the conference. But I had a great time anyway.

The funny part is, several people came up to me and said they loved my new hairdo. To a couple of them I said, “Thanks, but I hate it.“ To others I simply said thank you. I figured they were probably just trying to make me feel good to be honest. So I had to shake that off too. LOL!

One of my very favorite verses has become, 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations/arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Some versions say imaginations and some version say arguments. Either way it’s right. We can imagine all sorts of things and the enemy can create a lot of arguments in our head. We need to cast down all of those things and tell our mind to be captive to the obedience of Christ instead. Anything else is a waste of time.

So today, if things get to you, get up and just shake it off! Yes, even turn that song on and do yourself a shake it off dance! Then laugh it off! The joy of the Lord is your strength. (Neh 9:10)

May your joy be full today.

Love and blessings,
Joni
