Secondment Opportunities in the IAD

The IAD has a long track record of offering secondments to colleagues seeking an opportunity to focus on a specific academic development project or initiative. We now have four exciting 6 month full-time secondments available to help us move forward on our Concordat actions. These include developing a new Research Staff Hub, career support resources, training for managers and PIs and support with redeployment.

Full details of the secondment projects are available on our blog: https://edin.ac/3mrNBUc

Secondment Opportunity in ERO

The Edinburgh Research Office (ERO) also have an upcoming internal three month secondment opportunity available open to University of Edinburgh staff on fixed term contracts only (due to funder conditions), starting in January 2021. This role will work with the University Responsible Research Metrics Working Group and Edinburgh Research Office, to deliver the key requirements for DORA compliance and encourage good practice adoption at the University.

Expressions of interest (why you are interested and suitable for the role, no more than 500 words) and any informal enquiries, should be sent directly to Dr Louise Ker (Louise.Ker@ed.ac.uk ) in the Edinburgh Research Office by 17.00 30th November 2020.

For further details, please see the link to the project advert which can be found here

WriteFest - Happening this November!

November is Academic Writing Month!

This annual event was established as a way to support academic writing. During November 2020, the IAD will be running WriteFest, a local contribution to this academic writing month, with the aim of bringing people together to raise awareness and celebrate academic writing.

This years’ WriteFest includes online writing retreats and writing hours, writing workshops, online resources and guides to support you with space and time to write.  We will be blogging and sharing writing tips on twitter via the hashtag #AcWriFest20.

To see what is running during November and to access resources and support for academic writing visit: https://edin.ac/2Se1Lvc

How to Peer-Review Manuscripts for Journals (AHSS)

25th Nov 2020 (13:30-15:30)

The workshop is designed specifically for Arts, Humanities and Social Science postdocs and researchers at an early stage of their career with little or no experience of reviewing manuscripts for journals. The peer-review system helps to ensure the quality of published research. Journal editors are therefore reliant on experts who can deliver independent reviews in a timely fashion. The ability to review manuscripts should be a core skill of every researcher.

By learning how to review research manuscripts quickly and effectively, you will:
  • Gain a core skill that every researcher should have;
  • Free up more time for your own research;
  • Develop a better understanding of how to write your own manuscripts.
After attending this course you will be able to:
  • Understand how to critically evaluate a research manuscript;
  • Apply practical methods for reviewing a manuscript quickly and effectively;
  • Understand your responsibilities as a reviewer.

The British Academy Funding Call: Writing Workshops 2021

The British Academy, as part of the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), is inviting proposals for Writing Workshops in developing countries. These workshops should aim to develop the skills of early career researchers, including supporting and promoting the uptake of their research in journals and publications.

The intention of the Writing Workshops is to cultivate professional networks and mentorship and provide access for early career researchers in developing countries to the academic requirements of journals, including international journals, and to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to publish in these journals.

All workshops must take place before 15 March 2022
Application deadline: Wednesday 11 November 2020, 17.00 UK time.

For further information around eligibility requirements, value and duration and the Application Process visit: British Academy Funding Call

Pop-Up Training - Inclusion Matters Seminar Series

Inspired by the Institute for Academic Development’s pop-up training, Evidence Base is proud to bring you Pop-Up Inclusion Matters!

Evidence Base is one of 11 projects funded by the EPSRC Inclusion Matters programme, all designed to improve different aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion in the Engineering and Physical Sciences. While funded by EPSRC much of the work has considerable relevance across the STEMM fields and some of the workshops represent a brilliant opportunity for Early Career Researchers to participate and contribute to our understanding of barriers to career progression as well as opportunities to better understand their own networks and how to progress in their careers.

Pop-Up Inclusion Matters is a programme of presentations, seminars and workshops taking place throughout November which will showcase the work of the Inclusion Matters programme as well as other related work at the University of Edinburgh. Check out our website for full details of all sessions and to register

All sessions will be recorded so you can access the content asynchronously if you are unable to attend live, please register to ensure you receive notifications about recordings.

Contact k.nicollbaines@ed.ac.uk if you have any questions

Call for Researchers for the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas 2021

Ever fancied getting on stage and sharing your research at the world’s largest arts festival – the Edinburgh Festival Fringe? The Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas (CODI), currently in its eighth year is your opportunity to do just that. CODI is a collaborative engagement project between the four Edinburgh universities, local comedians, Fair Pley Productions and the Stand Comedy Club. We’ll work with you to develop a Fringe show to engage the public.

Interested? Sign up for one of our “So this is CODI” information sessions in November and visit our website to find out more:
CODI and Covid 19
At this stage it is impossible to say if the Edinburgh Festival Fringe will return in 2021, and if it does what form it will take. What we do know, is that if we want the option of taking part should it go ahead, we have to start planning now. Public Engagement with Research has never been more important and we are committed to enabling researchers to share their ideas.
In 2020, despite the obvious challenges, the show did go on. 23 researchers shared their Dangerous Ideas through CODI shows in online festivals and through productions live streamed from the Stand Comedy Club.

UKRI Early Career Researchers’ Forum

The UKRI is launching a new UKRI Early Career Researchers’ Forum which will launch as a pilot later this year and will seek to recruit 400 Early Career Researchers. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with a key research funder, understand their priorities and plans, and to learn more about funding and research policy.

Researchers who are interested in being a member of the forum, or who want to find out more without committing, can express interest on this short online form.

The forum follows the publication of UKRI's action plan on the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers in July.

News of the forum was announced by the new UKRI Chief Executive, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser who said "We have major responsibility for stewarding the research and innovation system and supporting a positive research culture. Because it is so important to understand the perspectives of early career researchers, I am pleased to announce that UKRI will be piloting an Early Career Researcher Forum. The forum will seek to reach out to the ECR community and engage on the issues that matter to you.”

EPSRC Review College

Researchers in CSE are being encouraged to apply for the EPSRC Peer Review College through their self-nomination process by Professor Andy Mount, Dean of Research for CSE  “This is a great opportunity for Early Career Researchers wanting experience of the peer review process.”

The Peer Review College broadly represents the research community it serves and contains a spread of knowledge and expertise covering the full breadth of EPSRC remit. New members receive training on effective peer review and the EPSRC funding process.

More details are available on the EPSRC website:
https://epsrc.ukri.org/funding/assessmentprocess/college/memberselection/

Researchers in other Colleges should be aware that these open calls exist for many funders – if you are interested in joining the pool of reviewers for funders in your research area, there should be details on their websites.
Student Experience Grants

The Student Experience Grants, run by the Grants Team at the Development and Alumni department Development and Alumni, are one-off contributions of up to £5,000 to support innovative projects and initiatives that will enhance students’ social, academic, entrepreneurial or cultural development.  They are also open to Staff at the University.

(Student Experience Grants replaced Innovation Initiative Grants (IIG) in summer 2018).

Covid-19 recovery open call launching soon to
Edinburgh University academics

As the country and Edinburgh and South East City Region continue to face the many challenges of Covid-19, the Scottish Funding Council has provided special funding for Universities in Scotland to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. One of the goals set by SFC is to fund translation of research into action, to support the region’s recovery.

The University of Edinburgh has allocated a special fund for this purpose, to be coordinated as part of the Data Driven Innovation (DDI) Initiative. The five DDI hubs and the programme office are busy ramping up a portfolio of projects. One part of the portfolio will be an Open Call to academics and researchers within the University of Edinburgh, welcoming proposals from across the University . The call has been planned to launch in early November 2020 around four main themes:

  • Smarter Places

  • Health, Wellbeing & Care

  • Cultural & Creative Recovery

  • Food, Climate and Sustainability

The total budget for the call is £500,000, which will be used to fund a range of projects. The majority of these will be in the region of £10,000, with some funding reserved to support a limited number of larger projects, worth £25k and £50k. Projects must be concluded before the end of FY 2020/21 (July 2021), and specific Terms and Conditions will apply, particularly related to projects’ abilities to show an impact in the region.

More information will be available soon on the DDI website.
