Kitchen Table Chat with Dayna Holland

This month, we talked to the newest member of our Board of Directors, Chartered Professional Accountant Dayna Holland.
What is your professional background and role on the Nestworks Board?

I am a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA). I’ve recently joined the Nestworks Board as Treasurer.

What are 3-6 words that describe you?

Learner/Student, Connector, Mom, Accountant, Skier, Happy

What is your experience with managing parenting and your professional life?

I will never be an expert at this. I think that it is mostly organized chaos with the illusion that there is a predictable routine. For me, the most important part of having a professional life while managing parenting has been the flexibility that comes with running my own business. There may never be an “off” button on my work, but at least I can generally determine when I focus on my work and I don’t feel guilty with taking time off if a child has been sick, or if I want to go away for a long weekend, or if I need to schedule a dentist appointment mid-day. I don’t have to ask for permission to do so.

What drew you to Nestworks?

The concept of having something like Nestworks available to me when I was starting my business would have been amazing. I honestly think that my stress levels would have decreased, just knowing that my kids were close by and enjoying the company of other kids. I think that my productivity and focus would have been higher, and the ability to connect with other parents who were working on their own careers would have made me feel less “alone”.

When my kids were significantly younger, I had the opportunity to attend these sessions called MomCafe, run by Jill Earthy. These were great events. I could bring my kids, where they could interact with other children and I could listen to great women business owners and also meet other moms that were looking for that connection with other women that were trying to balance their work and family lives. To me, Nestworks takes that idea, but amplifies it to be directed at business owners or employees who have alternative work arrangements with their employers.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I’m really excited to be a part of this organization. To be a part of something that will disrupt the traditional way of thinking how business should be conducted is fantastic. I’m happy that Madeleine and the rest of the Board have agreed to bring me on to help them with the numbers part of this organization.
