ELCA Messages.....

From Bishop Murray Finck - It is in dailiness that we prove our mettle

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton - Election Statement 2020
A PASSCODE HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE ZOOM LINKS FOR THE SUNDAY MORNING AND WEDNESDAY EVENING SERVICES.
The change was made to make joining our services easier, and to eliminate the need to wait for the host to admit you. Here's how it works:
Click on the link here, or the link on the website, to join the meeting. That's it!

PLEASE NOTE:
1 - You may be asked for a passcode. Enter the 6-digit passcode below your meeting link.

2 - Occasionally, you may have a new screen appear asking you to confirm you birthdate, or which account you would like to use to connect to the meeting. These are simply security questions from the Zoom program on your computer and you can ignore them. Click the 'X' in the top right or left corner to close the message. From there, you can continue to the Zoom service.

3 - Please call the church office at 805-544-2133 if you need assistance. The phone is answered by a real person, even on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.

Thank you
Please use the links listed here to join any of our worship services and Bible studies. We look forward to seeing you!

WORD
First Reading: Revelation 7:9-17
The book of Revelation is written to seven churches in western Asia Minor during a time of great oppression. Today’s reading is a response to the question asked in 6:17: “Who is able to stand?” The writer gives the faithful the assurance of God’s protection and a vision of victory.

Psalm 34

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3

A saint is one who has been set apart by God for God’s purposes. God, out of divine love, set us apart to be the children of God. Our holy hope is that we shall see God as God really is.

Alleluia Verse
Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12

Sermon - Pastor Richard Rollefson
Hymn of the Day - Blest Be the Tie that Binds  - ELW 656

Affirmation of Faith (Apostle's Creed)
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
                        creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Sprit,
                        born of the virgin Mary,
                        suffered under Pontius Pilate,
                        was crucified, died and was buried;
                        he descended to the dead.
                        On the third day he rose again;
                        he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
                        the holy catholic church,
                        the communion of saints,
                        the forgiveness of sins,
                        the resurrection of the body,
                        and the life everlasting. Amen.

“The Most Obscure Saint in the Bible” - A short bible study on the Book of Haggai for All Saints Sunday. You will find that Haggai is pretty much of an unknown yet in a few months he made a big impact on the Hebrew people.  Have your bible ready and join in.
Outdoor In-Person Communion Service Begins Sunday, November 8

Sign-up here so we know who to expect

As presented at the Adult Forum on Sunday, October 25, the Worship Team is proceeding with a recommendation for in-person, outdoor communion service at 12 noon beginning on November 8. We are seeking to meet the expressed interest of some of our Mt. Carmel members for in person worship and communion while observing guidelines and best practices to maximize the safety of those attending. We will continue with the existing Sunday morning schedule of Zoom worship at 9:30am followed by the Adult Forum at 10:45.

There will be a link in the VISTA semi-weekly email newsletter and on our website where you can RSVP to help us prepare the outdoor space beneath the shade canopy in front of the sanctuary for socially distanced clusters of same household members. You are asked to bring your own chair (if possible); metal church chairs will also be available. Attendees should be masked when arriving, will receive a temperature check and be signed in. The worship itself will be an abbreviated communion service (under 45 minutes in length). Communion will be done using prepackaged communion bread and cup kits. Entrance and departure routes will be marked and attendees are requested to mask following the service. There will not be a coffee time following worship. While we are aware that we are beginning this in-person worship at a time when the weather is turning cooler and we hope for needed rain, we hope that this will be an alternative worship for those wanting to meet in person.
Would you like help getting your completed ballot to the Post Office or County Elections Office? Or perhaps you would like transportation to vote in person? The Saturday Morning Men’s Group at Mt. Carmel are glad to assist. Please contact Bob Grosse at 805-543-5691, or email cgrosse@charter.net, to schedule a ride, or to ask them to mail or deliver your ballot for you.
Together we proclaim and embody God’s unconditional love
for the sake of the world

In November, the people of the United States will elect a president and others to public office. This election occurs at a time of change in our national and church life, a time when the Holy Spirit is at work in mysterious ways, and a time when many of our relationships are being changed and challenged. This election occurs in a time of global pandemic, racial injustice, economic hardship, sickness, suffering, loss and death. For many, this election also occurs in a time of great divisions between family, friends and neighbors. These divisions can seem deep, wide and potentially injurious to our democracy and our sense of community.

As people of faith, claimed by Jesus, we believe that the role of the church is to support and pray for the wellbeing of the world, for wise leaders to be raised up, and no matter what the outcome that we will be given the gift of “peace that passes all understanding that guards our hearts and minds through Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

Region 2 bishops and leaders – the Sierra Pacific, Pacifica, Southwest California, Rocky Mountain and Grand Canyon Synods of the ELCA – invite all who wish to gather for a time of prayer and reflection to join us as we pray for our nation, for those seeking office, for God’s beloved community, and for our rostered ministers as they seek to lead in their specific contexts during these conflicted times.

These livestream gatherings may be viewed on the
Rocky Mountain Synod's Facebook page at the times listed below:

Sunday, November 1 - 6:00 pm PST
Thursday, November 5 - 6:00 pm PST

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

Use this link to donate to the Mount Carmel matching funds challenge

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!
