COVID-19: business update 23 October

Importance of keeping up to date

Hello, I’m Cllr Tony Dale, Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills. Two issues now dominate business news, the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit.  While both issues seem to have been going on for an age, it is really important that businesses keep abreast of the changing situation and ensure they are prepared for all eventualities.

In terms of Covid, the definitive source of advice for everything from keeping staff and customers safe to financial support is the GOV.UK website. We will always do our best to help in any way we can but do please make sure that you keep updated with government announcements.

Brexit: Businesses need to prepare now

The UK is leaving the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union at the end of the year and there are some definite actions businesses need to take now. These actions are required whatever trading arrangements we end up with.
  • If you sell goods to the EU you must prepare for new customs procedures. Visit GOV.UK to check duties and customs procedures for exporting your goods worldwide from 1 January 2021.
  • If you travel to the EU for work purposes you will need to check if you need a visa or work permit and apply if necessary.
  • If you employ overseas nationals you will need to prepare your business for the implementation of the new immigration system. From 1 January 2021, if you want to hire anyone from outside the UK, including from the EU, you must be a Home Office licenced sponsor.
  • If you are a UK business or organisation that receives personal data from contacts in the EEA, you may need to take extra steps to ensure that the data can continue to flow legally at the end of the transition period.
  • If you provide services in the EU, you must ensure that your qualifications are now recognised by EU regulations to be able to practice or service clients in the EU.
Businesses can get a personalised summary of the actions they need to take by using the simple tool below.

Have your say: Developing a green economy

Cotswold District Council has launched a consultation on its Green Economic Growth Strategy. We're now seeking views from residents, businesses and other local groups on the priorities within it.

It's designed to help the local economy recover from the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown and start to transform the Cotswold economy over the next four years as it builds on the council’s priority of “enabling a vibrant economy.”

It sets out a number of priorities including growing key sectors such as agritech, cyber/digital and green technologies. The strategy is also committed to enabling town centres to thrive, supporting the visitor economy, improving infrastructure, boosting skills and training and attracting inward investment.
