Andries Coetzee Receives Faculty Recognition Award at Virtual Celebration

From Africa to Patagonia: Voices of Displacement team publishes articles in top linguistic journals

The A2P Collaboratory project From Africa to Patagonia: Voices of Displacement team recently had two more research articles published in top journals in Linguistics:
"Afrikaans in Patagonia: Language shift and cultural integration in a rural immigrant community" by Ryan Szpiech, Joshua Shapero, Andries Coetzee, Lorenzo García-Amaya, Paulina Alberto, Victoria Langland, Ellie Johandes, and Nicholas Henriksen in International Journal of the Sociology of Language.
"An investigation into utterance-fluency patterns of advanced L2 bilinguals: Afrikaans and Spanish in Patagonia" by Lorenzo García-Amaya, published in Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism.

Raising Our Voices 2020

Rachel Weissler to participate
in panel session

The American Anthropological Association hosts the online fall event series Raising Our Voices from November 5-14. Attendees can expect nine days of interaction and programming including over 100 live-streamed sessions covering COVID-19, climate change, race, the election, and much more. VTLx: Class Visits Speaker Series

Graduate students Rachel Elizabeth Weissler and Kelly Wright will be speaking to Virginia Tech’s “Language and Ethnicity in the U.S.” class on October 20. The invited talk is part of a speaker series hosted by the language sciences faculty at Virginia Tech. The speaker series -- called VTLx: Class Visits -- is focused primarily on enriching classes by allowing students to interact with the scholars behind the research they are reading, with a secondary function of inspiring the wider VT community with research on language.

Their talk is based on the coauthored paper “Language and Discrimination: Generating Meaning, Perceiving Identities, and Discriminating Outcomes” authored by Justin T. Craft, Kelly E. Wright, Rachel Elizabeth Weissler, and Robin M. Queen. In the talk, Kelly and Rachel describe the frameworks they work within and provide examples of 10 institutions that are affected by linguistic discrimination, expanding beyond the paper to describe recent work by Rachel and Kelly that relates to institutionalized racism and language.
