We pray for Felix in his new life in Christ.
Dear People of Hope,

This Sunday we joyfully welcomed Felix into the Body of Christ.  It was unlike any baptism I've presided over before.  And yet it truly was a meaningful and joyful baptism where God's love was affirmed and poured out for the baby and for all of us.  Please continue to pray for Felix and his family.

We also look forward to a baptism on Sunday, November 1.  Pray for Benjamin and his parents, Sarah and David.

Blessings of Christ,

Pastor Julie

Reformation Sunday - October 25
Hope and St Andrews, 10:30am Sunday
Synod-wide, 4pm Sunday

This Sunday we commemorate the anniversary of the Reformation.  Join us for morning worship, and consider joining others for a synod-wide afternoon worship.  You may want to wear the color RED or light some extra candles.
All Saints Sunday - November 1
Hope and St Andrews, 10:30am Sunday
Synod-wide, 4pm Sunday

In the morning, you are invited to bring a bowl of water to remember your baptism, you may also want to light candles- as many as you choose.  There will be a time to name names aloud and hear the ringing of a bell as we remember the whole communion of saints- especially those who have died.

In the afternoon, bring your water and candles again, as we join with others around the synod for another chance to worship together.
Seeking additional community volunteers!
Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday afternoons

Three days a week, University of Maryland students work virtually with local elementary schoolers for homework help, math games, reading skills, and more! Our time together is most productive in "1-on-1" Zoom breakout rooms, and in order to ensure safety and appropriate behavior of everyone involved, we are organizing for a third person to be present in each room. These silent chaperones, including non-students, are not expected to say anything, or even have their camera on. Just show up and be present!

Luther's Small Catechism:
10 Commandments in modern context

Sundays November 1 and 8, 2pm

The Small Catechism was Martin Luther's attempt to plainly review and interpret The Ten Commandments, The Apostle's Creed, The Lord's Prayer, baptism, and communion.  A lot of people don't read The Small Catechism after confirmation, so we'll spend two days going over what Martin Luther said about The Ten Commandments.  We'll also hear modern views of the commandments, specifically from The Forgotten Luther Project, ELCA World Hunger, Lutherans Restoring Creation, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, and a group of theologians of African descent.

Jeff T, now taking seminary classes, will lead these sessions.  Join here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86967238992?pwd=QTYrODM1QnVmRUMxMFYwL2pTWDZjdz09
Synod-wide prayer before and after the election
October 25-November 3, before the election
November 3-13, after the election

All Metro D.C. Synod congregations are invited to participate in two upcoming prayer series - 10 Days of Prayer before Election Day and 10 Days of Prayer following Election Day. Through this prayer series, we hope to reflect on how we practice our faith in public, how we care for our neighbors, and how we bear witness to God at work in our world despite the challenges of this year and season.

This series will begin during our synod-wide worship service for the Reformation, which will take place on Sunday, October 25 at 4:00 pm. At 5:00 AM every morning, a short devotional, written by leaders in our synod, will be made available on our Synod Facebook and Instagram pages. You are invited to share these devotionals widely and freely.
movies@hope presents Slay the Dragon
Friday November 6, 7:30pm

Join us on Zoom when movies@hope presents Slay the Dragon, a compelling documentary from 2019 that shines a spotlight on the practice of political gerrymandering. Now that another election has taken place, our representatives will be making the rules for contesting future elections.  Will they set the boundaries for Congressional and State legislative districts in a way that represents the will of the voters?

Zoom login information can be found below.  If you prefer to stream the film it is available to rent or through subscription on several platforms.  Then you can join us on Zoom around 9:20 for the post-film discussion.
