Primary News 2020/21
Issue 12

Dear Parents,

At SIS, taking action to apply learned skills, concepts, and knowledge is a critical step for global learners. We celebrate one of our 5th grader students, MeiMei, who is now a published author!  Her fantasy adventure fiction book is titled, “Boony and Friends”. MeiMei and her younger sister Lily drew all the illustrations.

From the author: Meet Boony and her friends! From visiting Ant Queendom to racing with turtles, adventures in Hong Kong to parties with friends, these timeless stories uncover the secret life of a pet bunny. Besides exciting adventures, readers will also understand more about the IB learner profiles with Boony and her friends.

MeiMei decided to donate 70% of the profit to a charity supporting kids’ reading and education. Please support her action by purchasing the book, sharing this news with others, and enjoying the book with the family. You can order via the following:

  • Amazon.com for $2.99, order here for your Kindle book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KHGC2HX
  • WeChat - the PDF version of the book will be sent to you for RMB 20. Order by scanning the QR code below:

Grade 2 UOI Field Trip
Last week Grade 2 went on their first field trip of the year! This is in connection with their next UOI, How We Organise Ourselves, a unit that highlights transdisciplinary learning: states of matter, non-fiction reading, procedural writing, report writing, measurements, and data analysis. What better way to get the children excited than to go to Pizza Hut as a provocation!

Our inquirers are learning about procedural writing, and the focus of this trip was to pay attention to the steps to make pizza the way Pizza Hut does. Did you know there are certain rules to follow when putting toppings on the pizza? After the trip, we compared the uncooked against the cooked pizza, then pointed out the changes we saw. We aim to connect this experience with big ideas in science, that matter can transform between states.

A special THANK YOU to all the parent volunteers who came on this trip.

Halloween event - Oct 30th

PSA is on it again! To bring fun and the spirit of Halloween to SIS primary students, PSA is preparing events for the day which will involve guest readers in the classrooms, small group tasks, and trick or treating. In compliance with healthy and safe practices, the events will be held in smaller groups and in separate locations for upper and early primary.

Costumes can be worn all day if students are comfortable in doing so. Alternatively, they can change at school. Please remember that full face masks or weapons are not allowed as part of the costume.

To volunteer, watch out for more details from PSA.

Upcoming:
  • Friday 23rd October: UP Assembly
  • Friday 30th October: Halloween Celebrations
  • Monday 2nd November: No School Day
Best wishes,
Mr. Kanabar
Ms. Wallace
Ms. Cedo
