Candidate Biographies

President Elect -  Anton Sumali 


Dr. Anton Sumali is the Vice President of the New Mexico Academy of Science (NMAS). This year (2020), he brought the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Bette Korber, to the NMAS/EPSCoR Annual Research Symposium. As the new Editor-in-Chief of the New Mexico Journal of Science, Dr. Sumali has attracted manuscripts and formed an editorial board for the journal with peer-reviewers from Sandia National Labs, UNM, Harvard, Intel, Princeton, ENMU, MIT, Oxford, and other research institutions.. Dr. Sumali has served on NMAS Board since 2013. 
Dr. Anton Sumali is a Research and Development Manager at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. He was an R&D staff member there from 2002 to 2011. From 1997 to 2002, Dr. Sumali was an Assistant Professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he received a Potter award -- the highest teaching award from Purdue University Schools of Engineering -- and several other awards. Dr. Sumali has published over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and in scientific conference proceedings. He is a Toastmasters International Advanced Communicator Gold. Anton Sumali received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1997 from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.   


Vice President - Dr. Babu R. Chalamala
 
Dr. Babu Chalamala is Manager of the Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department and Laboratory Program Manager for Grid Energy Storage at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM. Prior to joining Sandia in 2015, he spent twenty years in industrial R&D, mostly recently as a Corporate Fellow at MEMC Electronic Materials where he led R&D and product development in grid scale energy storage. Before that, he was involved in two startup companies for eight years. He spent early part of his research career at Motorola and Texas Instruments where he made contributions to electronic materials and display technologies. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, Academy of Sciences St Louis, and a Life Member of the Electrochemical Society. He received James Eads Engineering Award from the Academy of Sciences St Louis and the IEEE Morton Antler Lecture Award. He currently as vice chair of the IEEE PES Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee. He has also been active in the Materials Research Society, where he served as a General Chair of the 2006 MRS Fall meeting and continues to serve MRS in a number of leadership positions. He has a B.Tech. in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Sri Venkateswara University and a PhD in Physics from the University of North Texas. He authored 120 papers  and awarded 10 US patents.
 
 
Secretary - Malva Knoll
 
Malva Knoll received her Master’s Degree in Secondary & Adult Science Education from the University of New Mexico in 1980.  She worked as a high school chemistry teacher for Albuquerque Public Schools from 1975-2007; and was Director of Education for the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History from 2007-2012. Malva Knoll has been an active member of NMAS serving as Secretary from 1988-1994 and NMAS President in 1995. Malva Knoll  supports teachers through work with the NM Science Teachers‘ Association, and was a member in 2013-2014 of the Science Math Advisory Council (MSAC) which advises the Secretary of Education. M. Knoll continues to dedicate her efforts to projects bettering Science education for students and educators in New Mexico as she shares her knowledge about State and National Science Standards. 


Director at Large - Dr. Shanalyn Kemme 
 
Dr. Kemme is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories.  She has over 28 years of experience working in classical and physical optics including: diffractive optical elements (DOE), holographical OE, computer-generated holograms (CGH), micro-optical and fiber-optical design, fabrication, and integration.  She coordinates a team of Sandians with expertise in all facets of OE realization, including theoretical modeling, numerical simulation, microsystems fabrication, characterization, and microsystem assembly.  Recent projects include LIDAR and thermal management using diffractive/plasmonic components.  Dr. Kemme’s development of a free-space optical transponder led to a prestigious R&D 100 Award in 2002.  Lately, she was awarded an Individual Exceptional Service citation while Acting Manager of the Photonics Microsystems and Technologies group at Sandia and a Technical Team Award in Quantum Technologies.  Dr. Kemme is co-author of the section on “Diffractive Optical Elements” in the Optical Engineer’s Desk Reference (ed. W.L. Wolfe, Optical Society of America, 2002), and is editor and chapter-author of the book “Microoptics and Nanooptics Fabrication,” published by CRC Press, Taylor and Francis in 2010.  Dr. Kemme has holds 4 patents, has presented over 15 invited talks, and has authored over 60 conference and peer-reviewed papers.  She received her Ph.D. in Optical Sciences at the Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona in 1998 and was named Adjunct Professor this year.  Dr. Kemme is heavily involved in SPIE – The International Society for Optical Engineering as a member and Program Committee member.  She serves on two regional advisory boards: 1) OP-TEC, a National Center for Optics and Photonics Education as well as 2) CNM Photonics Technology Advisory Board.
