CIRES/NOAA Science@Home webinars
Tuesdays, 1:00-1:30 p.m., through the end of 2020
Please share with K-12 educators and homeschooling parents in your network! CIRES/NOAA Science@Home webinars are designed to connect middle and high school classrooms that are now in the virtual/remote learning landscape with scientists. Each webinar features a 10-15 minute presentation by a scientist about how they got into science, what they do at work, and what it is that they research, followed by 10-15 minutes of live Q&A. Each month features an overarching theme: November's is polar science
- November 3: Radars and remote sensing of glaciers with Ryan Cassotto
- November 10: Ice dynamics with Twila Moon
- November 17: Sea ice with Walt Meier

Mobile food pantry
Wednesday, November 4, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Parking lot next to Wolf Law, main campus
CU Boulder students, staff, and faculty and Boulder County community members are welcome at weekly food pantry events through November 4. Attendees can walk up or drive through to receive up to 30 pounds of free food in multiple boxes, including dairy, meat, and fresh produce. A line following social distancing requirements will be in place for walk-up attendees. Staff will be present to direct vehicle traffic in the drive-through lane, where food will be loaded into your trunk. Face coverings and social distancing required. Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) webinar series
Strategies for integrating climate science into the elementary elassroom
Thursday, November 4, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
K-12 educators: This webinar provides strategies for elementary teachers to integrate climate science into their classroom. Educators Alicia Christensen, Rachel Han, and Tiffany Boyd will explore how to break down this complex and controversial topic, teach it across disciplines, make it culturally relevant, use it to inspire curiosity, and motivate students to develop climate change solutions. El equipo detrás de la serie de webinars Ciencia-en-casa de CIRES/ se entusiasma de anunciar una serie de webinars (seminarios virtuales) mensuales en español. Estas series pretenden poner en contacto a clases y estudiantes de medio grado e instituto que se encuentran actualmente estudiando a distancia con científicos/as. Cada webinar (seminario virtual) cuenta con una presentación de unos 10 o 15 minutos, a cargo de científicos/as, donde nos cuentan cómo se metieron en el mundo de la ciencia, qué hacen en su labor de científicos/as y qué están investigando actualmente. Cada presentación va seguida de unos 10 o 15 minutos para preguntas y respuestas en directo. La candidata a doctorado Lina Pérez Angel presentará sobre paleoclimatología.
Out in STEM Symposium
Friday-Saturday, 6-7 November
The oSTEM (Out in STEM) chapter at CU Boulder is hosting a virtual symposium this weekend (Fri evening and Saturday all day) open to all members of the CU Boulder community (both LGBTQ+ identifying and allies). The Symposium will include professional panels, affinity groups, games and social opportunities, a research roundtable, and a keynote talk by Sam Brinton on, "More than representation: How MY -LGBTQ+ and STEM Worlds Collided." Diversity & Inclusion Summit

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE) is hosting the Diversity & Inclusion Summit remotely. Registering for individual workshops lets you customize your engagement. Workshops include classroom practices for cultivating inclusion; a discussion of Campus One Read So You Want to Talk about Race; anti-Asian racism, COVID-19, and antiracism; and Heartwork: Finding your fire.

Resisting environmental injustice through education
Environmental justice speaker series
Tuesday, November 10, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Environmental problems do not impact everyone equally. The impacts are different across race and class. This is why it is important to include race and class in conversations about environmental protection. The speakers in this panel are experts and local activists working towards environmental justice, including
- Michelle Gabrieloff Parish: former Energy & Climate Justice Manager at CU Boulder’s Environmental Center.
- Micaela Iron Shell-Dominguez: mentor and director for the International Indigenous Youth Council and Co-founder of Women from the Mountain.
- Fatuma Emmad: Co-founder of Frontline Farming.
The panel is hosted by CU Boulder’s Society of Environmental Engineers (SEVEN), in collaboration with the Environmental Engineering Program, the BOLD Center and CU Boulder’s chapters of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. This series originated in direct response to the murder of George Floyd, and the racism and systematic inequalities disproportionately impacting communities of color across the United States. The UC Berkeley Understanding Global Change Project and CLEAN
Wednesday, November 11, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
K-12 educators: The Understanding Global Change (UGC) Project, University of California Museum of Paleontology, UC Berkeley developed a suite of online and interactive learning materials that support educators and students to explore the Earth as an interconnected, dynamic system. The UGC resources, co-designed with classroom teachers and leaders in climate education, are integrated with research-based teaching practices that use modeling of phenomena to make learning visible and support the investigation of local and global actions that reduce human impacts on global environments. In this webinar, you will learn about the UGC Project tools for teaching about climate and energy using CLEAN resources from UC Berkeley expert Jessica Bean. Boulder Ecosystem Summit

You're invited to a series of upcoming interactive webinars on ecosystems and their impact on our community. The CU Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities, in partnership with the City of Boulder, Boulder County, and the Community Foundation, is offering three webinars that will enhance community awareness and galvanize action toward environmental sustainability. Each webinar will feature a moderator and several guests. Participants will engage in a forum to ask questions and share ideas. Each segment will profile opportunities for active participation by community members.

Tues. Nov. 17, 11:30-1:00 p.m.: Watershed Health and Air Quality. Trends in Boulder's snow pack, land cover, and stream macroinvertebrates; community involvement; trends in Boulder's greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants; health impact of emissions and pollution. Moderated by ENVS associate professor Amanda Carrico.
Thurs. Nov. 19, 4:00-5:30 p.m.: Biodiversity and Urban Land Cover. Status and trends in Boulder's birds, bees and black bears; community involvement; Boulder's urban tree canopy and its importance to biodiversity and human health. Moderated by ENVS assistant professor Karen Bailey.

Fiske Planetarium seeks public talk facilitators
Fiske Planetarium is seeking interested graduate students or postdocs to join our team of facilitators for the Science Under the Dome public talk series. This program offers early career scientists a chance to develop a talk on a wide variety of scientific topics for a broad public audience of both students and members of the community. The facilitator team recruits speakers and manages rehearsals for talks under three tracks: The Science of Sci-Fi, Science and Society, and Climate Change in Our Backyard. Facilitators gain experience in leadership, science communication, and event coordination.
