How do we break out of existing systems that threaten life on Earth? In this newsletter we offer a new perspective on this question in an essay about the swamp. Furthermore, we call on you to share your thoughts on what ‘home’ means to you, especially in these times of Covid-19. And it contains the announcement  of a talk on the unheard voices of statues, rooms and places by composer Elaine Mitchener, the last two episodes of Dieuwke Slumps podcast about the artist’s archive and info on the new student initiative HALT.
Open Call APRIA 2020: Redefining Oikos
Where do we feel at home?
Until today the Covid-19 pandemic urges us to ‘stay safe and stay home’. What or who determines what home is and what does it mean to be at home? It’s a complex concept and certainly cannot be associated with safety for everyone. For APRIA’s new Open Call, we welcome contributions that delve into the complex meaning of oikos, re-examining concepts of home and the tension between safe and harmful spaces in times of crisis. We look forward to your artistic reflections, propositions, guides, kits, and research! Deadline for submission 7 December 2020contactapria@artez.nl

APRIA is our online platform that publishes all forms of research through the arts: essays, image and sound contributions.
HALT: ally and partner
From our ongoing research into how we can achieve and contribute to a school that is safe for everyone, with room for differences and attention for unheard stories and solidarity, we commit ourselves as ally and partner to the student initiative HALT. We will pay attention to their projects on our website and social media and we also actively look for opportunities for collaboration. HALT introduces itself here in our newsletter. You can follow their initiatives via Instagram.

"Hi! We are 'Hungry, Angry, Late and Tired', HALT for short, a student initiative within ArtEZ. We are committed to improving intersectional inclusivity within ArtEZ. We want to bridge the gap between students of marginalised groups and the board of ArtEZ. We also want to ensure that inclusivity is integrated into the curriculum of the various study programs, and hold ArtEZ accountable for their actions around these issues."
Episodes of Dieuwkes podcast Eventually I'd have to disappear with Fonge Frieling and Peggy Bouva/Maartje Duin
With these two new episodes we conclude the podcast mini-series by alumna Dieuwke Slump (theater teacher) in which she researches ways to open up the archive. Now you can listen to the whole series here at once! With Milo Rau (director NT Gent), Anna Schlooz (dancer),  Fonge Frieling (theater maker) and Peggy Bouva & Maartje Duin (makers podcast Plantage van mijn voorouders). Listen to it on our website or find Radio ArtEZ in your favourite podcast app.
7 December: Unheard Voices
online Kitchen Table Conversation
with Elaine Mitchener
George Floyd’s killing at the hands of an institution which is supposed to ‘serve and protect’ unleashed a global outpouring of rage, anguish and despair. Around the world people mobilised and took to the streets demanding an end to institutional systemic racism. And in some countries, statues were toppled at the hands of the public. This begs the question: Who do monuments represent and who do they speak for? Vocalist, movement artist and composer Elaine Mitchener will talk with us about this question and focuses on the unheard voices of statues, rooms, places. In preparation for this conversation you can expect a podcast from Elaine in November in which she tells more about her ideas. Make sure you don't miss this and register in advance!
