October News

Autumn at Highbury is so beautiful with rich colours in the warm sunshine

The Highbury's Garden Project

The ‘Highbury’s Gardens’ project will reinstate the original driveway from the Lodge up to the house, restore the Rhododendron Garden, open up a view between the lake and the house and improve the footpath network to the east of the house.
We are well on the way to recruiting around 50 garden volunteers to lend their skills and time to the project. If you are keen to join the team please fill in this form or visit the Recruitment page

Volunteers are currently onsite two days per week and are working in small groups with our Volunteer Coordinators contracted from Sustainable Life Birmingham. They are working to the Landscape plans of Birmingham City Council's Landscape Practice Group and are clearing the way for contractors to lay new paths from December.

Everyone onsite is working in a way that is sympathetic to the built and natural heritage features of the landscape, they are creating new habitats and wildlife pathways through the grounds. Sustainable and renewable resources are being used wherever possible and every care is being taken to use locally sourced labour and materials.

The paths will be similar to this when they are finished

This project will open up a view from the pool in the middle of Highbury Park back up to the Grade II* listed mansion.
Experts are undertaking pruning propagation and replanting of the Rhododendron Garden.
The gates and piers at the Lodge entrance will be renovated.

The Chamberlain Highbury Trust continue to work in close partnership with other organised park groups such as the Friends of Highbury Park, the Bee Keepers and Highbury Orchard Community and the Council's Parks Department to ensure that our work is complementary and everyones knowledge of the site has fed in to the design.

We also welcome feedback from park users and thank you to those who completed our survey in September. Please keep in touch with your comments or questions and we will strive to answer them.

Thank you for your continued support and we hope you can enjoy the new path network, and estate improvements next Spring/Summer.

Colonial History and Heritage Interpretation

The trust has set up an advisory committee to help CHT develop our interpretation and education programme to reflect the work of Chamberlain during his time as Colonial Secretary and the impact of his decisions and policies on communities across the world even to the present day.
Even after only one session with this group we are really excited about the potential for exciting, creative and more representative exhibits and events at Highbury. The Trust is committed to exploring colonialism and its legacies through our permanent interpretation - such as exhibitions and tours, our activities and events, our educational programmes, and youth leadership programme.

Our commitments to this city are to:
- ensure that Highbury is an inclusive place, reflecting the diversity and culture of our city
- be welcoming to visitors from around the UK and internationally
- be a place to learn about the history of Highbury, home of the Chamberlain family from 1880 to 1914 and the way this place shaped the world

More information on Chamberlain’s role as Colonial Secretary can be found here.

We would like to work with a young person of colour to undertake a specific piece of research that relates to gaps in CHT’s understanding of Chamberlain’s role and impact as Colonial Secretary which will be worked on over the next 6 months.

You could choose one task for the whole of your visit or return to base and retrain in another skill and carry out a new task when your family needs a change.

Who should come
Families and Bubbles – we are inviting households to come to the orchard to learn skills and carry out tasks together.
There are certain tasks in our orchard that require team work and close group work - your family or bubble can help us get these done.

Very young children are not be safe to participate, but there will be tasks suitable from 5+ and also tasks for people with reduced mobility, grip or balance. Some of the work will be very physical, all of the work will be outdoors. This will all be explained and you can pick tasks that suit your families needs and interest.
