The new MLB Now graphics package uses a baseball-themed Rube Goldberg machine to demonstrate the scientific thinking within the game. The show open depicts a series of chain reactions that ultimately perform the simple task of unfurling a scroll of paper to reveal the show logo.
The physical components of the machine itself are baseball-related objects including logos representing 15 MLB teams. Graphic overlays in many of the scenes add sabermetric formulas and diagrammed calculations for a look that communicates the show’s message: while simpler minds think they know baseball, the deeper, more analytic thinkers really have the game down to a science.
The set content graphics uphold the conceptual theme established in the show open through a blueprint diagram illustrating the complexity behind the solution.
The scenes for the Rube Goldberg machine were built in 3D using Autodesk Maya. The open was edited and color corrected in Final Cut Pro X and graphic overlays were added using Adobe After Effects. Additional elements were physically constructed and shot in camera over green screen using a Sony Alpha a7 III. This footage was then composited into Maya generated 3D environments using Adobe After Effects. Set content graphics were designed and animated using the Adobe Creative Suite.
MLB Now earned Gold for Best Graphic Design from the Grand Jury and MLB Network also took home Silver in Sports Program Open and Titles for Baseball Is Us.
