It’s officially thankfulness season, and while many folks in our community are passionate about giving back to the city that has given us so much, it’s often hard to decide exactly what to participate in — given the hundreds of opportunities around the Triangle. Well, why not start by using what you love to help others?
We’ve made it easy to turn your passions into a gift by putting together this volunteer guide catered to specific interests. From artists and makers to those passionate about our local minority groups, we’ve rounded up opportunities for everyone.
🦃
If the holidays are your favorite time of the year
○ Participate in Urban Ministries of Wake County’s annual Turkey Drive, Tuesday, Nov. 17 — or donate to support the organization’s efforts to alleviate hunger and homelessness. ○ Donate toys to patients at WakeMed Children’s Hospital during their annual holiday drive
🍎

○ Empower students to reach their full potential through Wake Harvest’s youth mentorship program

○ Donate goods for women escaping domestic violence situations or volunteer with InterACT
🏠
If you want to stay in your home
○ Contact a local assisted living facility to ask about becoming a pen pal with a resident ○ Donate airline miles (and other gifts) to children participating in Eastern NC’s Make-A-Wish program
💚
If you’re an advocate for mental illness + health awareness
○ Volunteer to support administrative, educational, and outreach projects at New Leaf Behavioral Health
○ Become an instructor or facilitator of support groups through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter serving Wake County.
🗓️ If you’re on a tight schedule
○ Choose a time to donate blood through The Blood Connection
○ Be matched with a United Way of the Triangle event that works with your schedule
🌳 If you live + breathe Raleigh
○ Donate or volunteer during various events hosted by Preserve NC

Weather
○ 72º | Rainy | 100% chance of rain 🌧️ ○ The Triangle could see up to four inches of rain today and tomorrow + flash flood warnings are in effect until 7 p.m. for Orange and Person counties. Fallen leaves may also clog storm drains, contributing to the risk of isolated flooding across the region. (WRAL)
Dish
○ If you’re planning to let someone else do the cooking this Thanksgiving, don’t forget to place your orders before the deadline. To help you plan your holiday feast, we’ve created a list of local restaurants and catering options around the Triangle offering dine-in and carry-out options. 🥧
Development
○ Today, developers are breaking ground on the $1 billion Fenton project near Cary Towne Boulevard. Phase one — scheduled to be completed by spring 2022 — is slated to develop more than 500,000 square feet of retail and office space + 357 luxury rental units, a state-of-the-art theatre, and a 12-story hotel. 🏗️ (Triangle Business Journal) ○ Raleigh-based developer Atlas Stark has filed a rezoning request, which would allow development up to 20 stories at 1009 Hammel Drive, near Dix Park. The project calls for 250,000 square feet of office space + 500 residential and retail units. 🧱
State
○ Beginning today at 8 a.m., full-service restaurants will now qualify to apply for financial aid through the Mortgage, Utility, and Rent Relief Program (MURR) — a product of the NC Department of Commerce. Restaurants may apply for payments up to $20,000 per location, for up to two locations. 🍽️ (via ABC 11)
Coronavirus
○ Yesterday, NC surpassed 3,100 COVID-19 cases in a single day — a new record for daily reported averages. Positive cases are now ~8% of all tests in our state. 😷 (The News & Observer) ○ ICYMI, Governor Roy Cooper — based on recommendations from NCDHHS — has extended Phase 3 reopening protocols until at least early December + reduced limits on public and private indoor gathering to 10 people, effective tomorrow, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. (WRAL)
Job
○ Amazon is currently hiring for 2,800 seasonal positions across NC, with a priority on employing veterans. More than half of the positions listed are located in the Triangle, plus pay starts at $15 per hour, with benefits for full-time employees. 📦(TechWire)
DYK

Oftentimes, food and community go hand-in-hand. We gather together around the dinner table to make and share meals with those we care for. Since large physical gatherings may not be possible for the upcoming holidays, we’ve decided to help our community share food + come together virtually. 🧑🍳
We’re working on compiling recipes from our readers to create a RALtoday cookbook to share just in time for the holidays. If you have a perfect pumpkin pie recipe, go-to green bean casserole, or secret family sauce — we want to hear about it. Send us an email with your recipe (and photos if you have any) to be included in our cookbook. |
