  AT THE ROUNDHOUSE AND WAREHOUSE
October 24th

 Warehouse building
Last Saturday, volunteers took advantage of some clear weather to remove all but a few items from the warehouse building.  The last room in the buildng is virtually clear and ready for power washing. The building has several sliding warehouse doors that are in need of repair in addition to the final repair of some glass block windows. There is also tuck pointing and masonry repairs needed.  Materials are on site, we just need some volunteers with those skill sets.
Leaves are falling and with the weather changing it becomes more imperative to start putting material back into the warehouse. The steel racking needs to be partially disassembled and rebuilt in the warehouse and 4070 parts identified and returned to the racks.  By Saturday, we should have a plan for the long term storage of the oil drums.
The solid steel rack is available for use in the warehouse, but will need to be modified to fit it back in.

If any of the tasks above fit your skillset and you you would like to help out but are not available on Saturdays, please let us know and we can make arrangements for you to come in during the week. Weekdays are usually less hectic and we may be able to arrange for someone to help and learn a new skill in the process. Call the office or send an email if you are interested.

Roundhouse
Excavating work around the turntable is nearing completion.  So we will need help relaying the brick in the turntable pit and a lot of cleanup work.  The air lines still need to have the final end connections made.

4070
We are still waiting for the arrival of 2 more sheets for the boiler side of the cab.  Once they arrive, we can resume welding work on the cab.  There are still 4070 parts in the ACY boxcar out in the yard and in several steel bins in stalls 8-10.   We need some help retrieving those before the weather turns inclement. Most likely we will need to palletize those parts and use a truck to bring them back to the roundhouse for inspection.
The 4070 project cannot move forward until all the parts are retrieved and put into centralized storage. We need volunteers to help us in this very basic task. Please consider helping us in any way you can  All parts have to be identified and tagged and their locations noted.  Machining help is needed to continue work on the brake rigging. All of the light Mikado drawings that we have scanned have now been cataloged according to number, name and assembly.

 Operating crew:
We always need a few crew members to help out with tours. There will be two tours on Saturday one at 11.  Last Saturday, two groups enjoyed tours and a caboose ride.
Brakeman classes will be held beginning Oct. 28th. If you are interested, call the office or use Signup genius.  This is open to MRPS members in good standing over the age of 18. There is a fee for course materials. It can also lead to a recognized certification, so its a great opportunity.

With the recent spike in Covid19 cases, it is even more important for volunteers to observe safe practices. Maintain a distance, wear your mask and wash your hands frequently.

    Admin help
The gift shop is still looking for a manager or any volunteer help.  Although Open houses have been suspended, we still need to reconcile some transactions and verify inventory.   The board has a Christmas Open House under  consideration. Our challenge is how to carry this out in a Covid environment. Volunteer help and input is needed.

The job of directing the Roundhouse can often be overwhelming. If you are free during the week, let Steve K put you on a short list of help to cover the phones and other simple tasks on site. Just a few hours needed when he has to leave the site.
