There is exciting work in the humanities coming out of the UM History Department's Oral History Internship summer certificate program, which was launched in 2020. The COVID-19 Oral History Project offers diverse perspectives on how people, businesses, and organizations in Western Montana experienced the Coronavirus pandemic during the lockdown and phased reopening in the spring and summer of 2020.

Meet Graduate Student Emma Gjullin

Emma is a graduate student from Corrales, New Mexico in year second year in the Environmental Philosophy and Natural Resource Conflict Resolution programs. She was attracted to UM as Emma has always wanted to live in Montana as she has family ties to the state. Next semester Emma is graduating and hopes to pursue professional facilitation in collaborative conservation.

While Emma's undergraduate major was in mathematics, attending a liberal arts school allowed her to study subjects outside of her discipline. Emma comments that "the humanities provided a much needed balence in perspective" in her studies.

Tune In

Feeling flashbacks to the 2000 Election? Us too.

Listen to "The Shadow of the 2000 Election" from the Daily & the New York Times for some perspective.

The Humanities Institute would like to announce a special thanks to the NEH Cares Grant that has allowed us to continue to support the humanities
at the University of Montana.

A word with the director
Gillian Glaes

Well it has been quite a semester by any standard. We've combined a pandemic and a national election with global implications to create a situation unlike any other. I refreshed the apps on my smartphone so many times this week that I thought it might just give up. And now that we have the results of the election, we can say that this is a truly historic moment on so many levels.

And while we are coming to the end of this semester and this year, we still have several exciting events on the horizon. In the month of November, we have two exciting offerings. One is a a roundtable on the digital humanities at UM scheduled for Tuesday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. on Zoom. The other is our second event this semester in the environmental humanities: a roundtable scheduled for Tuesday, November 17 via Zoom and focused on science communication. We'll feature two UM graduate students. Both events are connected to our initiatives in the digital humanities and the environmental humanities, respectively. Our goal through these initiatives is to provide a platform from which to explore important issues in each field. We look forward to our continued work in these areas and hope to see you there!

Next semester, we're looking forward to several events. We are honored, for example, to spotlight the literary achievements of our colleagues in the English Department with our Humanities Conversations Panel focused on literature and scheduled for Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Please register on EventBrite for these events to obtain the Zoom links.

As we continue to host events on Zoom and marvel at the turnout and enthusiasm, I would like to take a moment to recognize some critical contributions to the HI's success this semester. We were lucky to receive an NEH Cares Grant, which has, together with the College of Humanities and Sciences, supported UM's Humanities Institute this semester. Thank you to the good people at Humanities Montana for administering this important grant program.

Graduate student coordinators Gray O'Reilly and Emma Gjullin worked tirelessly to organize our events in the environmental humanities over the summer and this semester. We are grateful for their inspired leadership and their creative vision. And we're thankful for all of the people at UM and beyond who are interested in and invested in the environmental humanities.

Finally, I would like to recognize the contributions of our intern, Chloe Loeffelholz, who has shown incredible grace, poise, dignity, and courage this semester. Her numerous contributions to the success of the HI are too many to count here. Just take a look at our Instagram page, for example, and you'll see so much of her good work.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the efforts of Chloe, Gray, and Emma together with the contributions of the Dean's Office, our advisory board, Humanities Montana, the NEH Cares Grant, Zoom, our presenters and moderators, and all the people who have attended and participated in our events this semester. Thank you for your engagement. Thank you for your commitment. And thank you for your contributions to the UM Humanities Institute.
