Help Desis in Battleground States VOTE

With less than a few weeks left in the election, do you want to help our community vote? Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer that only takes a couple of hours of your time?

Talk directly to Desi voters in battleground states to ensure they have the information they need to VOTE for a Biden-Harris ticket.

We are partnering with South Asians for Biden and AAPIs for Biden on a weekly basis for this phone banking. Find a time that works for you and sign up below.

IMPORTANT: When you RSVP, please put an "IN" in front of your First Name to indicate that you are volunteering with Indians for Biden, so that we can recognize you for your efforts.

After you RSVP, you will be sent a Zoom link to register. When you enter your virtual room to call voters, you will be given directions from a coordinator on how to dial voters, information about voting in that state, and a sample script you can follow--no prior experience necessary.

We need Biden's Pandemic Strategy

Read the full Issue Brief here

Biden is prepared to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future threats to global health and safety. Needless to say, Trump's response to the virus has been disastrous, with more than 200,000 deaths and an outbreak that has halted the U.S. This number is not a necessary given either– if the U.S had the same death rate as Canada, 120,000 American lives would have been saved. Trump has eliminated the White  office set up by the Obama administration to combat pandemics and Predict, a program designed to track emerging pathogens around the world. When the virus arrived on the U.SHouse shores, he downplayed the threat and continues to do so, with his latest statement that the Coronavirus is a “blessing from God.” Even as more than 7.7 million Americans lost their jobs due to recession, the Trump administration continues to delay comprehensive relief packages and has, instead, pushed the nomination process for their Supreme Court pick, Amy Coney Barett.

Biden’s administration has pledged an immediate response and measurable difference. The Biden Plan will ensure that it restores trust and credibility in the institutions designed to protect Americans from the outbreak and enact appropriate national emergency responses. Testing will be made widely available and there will be at least ten mobile testing sites per state. Daily White House reports will ensure that every state and actor has access to reliable data on the ongoing pandemic, so that responses may be adjusted accordingly. Biden will expand the Center for Disease Control’s surveillance programs so that tests can cover especially vulnerable populations such as those in nursing homes and the homeless.

The Biden administration will protect health care workers and give all frontline heroes high-quality gear to ensure that they are not putting themselves and their families at risk to serve the nation. He will direct the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to ensure the safety of workers by issuing the Emergency Temporary Standard which will require health care facilities to implement infectious disease exposure control plans. Moreover, Biden will fight to ensure that federal workers are able to access workers’ compensation benefits, so that families which are struggling with the economic ramifications of the pandemic will not be forced to fend for themselves. Credit will continue to flow to job creators, paid leave and child care assistance will be ensured, and reimbursements to employers will ensure that families are cared for in this time of acute vulnerability. Now more than ever, we need definitive leadership in the White House and Biden will deliver.

A More Prosperous Future for the Indian American Community: Op Ed by Vice President Biden for India-West

"I’ve always felt deeply connected to the Indian American community because of the values we share: duty to family and elders, treating people with respect and dignity, self-discipline, service, and hard work. For me, these values were passed down from my Irish ancestors who risked everything for a better life in America, and they have shaped me as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and a man of faith and a lifelong public servant. And I’ve seen how those shared values, that immigrant story, forged my lasting relationship with Indian American constituents in Delaware and with Indian American staff both in the United States Senate and in the Obama-Biden Administration, where we’d exchange stories of our families’ sacrifice and marvel that only in America would we be living their dream."

Kumail Nanjiani, Mindy Kaling, others support Biden-Harris ticket at 'South Asian Block Party'

"Aasif Mandvi, who emceed, intermingled dad jokes with pleas to the South Asian community to vote. In 2016 some of the races were decided by the small margin that could have been the desi community in states including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida. We are the difference, he said. Even in Texas, there are enough South Asians, if they voted for Biden-Harris could turn that state blue. Harish Jajoo is running for Congress in Sugarland. Turn Sugarland to Jilebiland. I know that joke is bad, but where else am I going to use it."

"‘MyNameIs’ and ‘IstandwithKamala’ campaign went viral after Georgia Republican senator David Perdue seemed to mock Harris’ name at a rally of President Donald Trump in Macon, Georgia, on Friday.

KAH’-mah-lah? Kah-MAH’-lah? Kamala-mala-mala? I don’t know, said Perdue instead of “comma-lah” as Harris has repeatedly said her first name is pronounced.

I’ll keep it simple: If you can pronounce ‘former’ Senator David Perdue, you can pronounce ‘future’ vice-president Kamala Harris, said Harris spokesperson Sabrina Singh."

"Amit Jani, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Outreach Coordinator of the Biden campaign, launched the ‘My name is’ campaign to push back against the bigotry."

Voter outreach in South Asian languages ramps up before the election

"Vijay Mehta and his wife, Vinoo, attended a virtual pre-election event from their home in Temple, Texas, with a goal of helping to combat misinformation online. While that strategy could apply to any number of groups this election cycle, this audience was a specific one. The couple spoke in Gujarati, a language originating from the Indian state of Gujarat."

There was so much misinformation online and on WhatsApp. We wanted to participate in the event to help combat it,” he said of the event, which was organized by the Indians for Biden Council, an Indian American community group."

South Asian Americans could play key role at ballot box

"South Asian Americans have traditionally high voter turnout and have grown to become the second largest immigrant group in the U.S. They also tend to lean democratic."

"This week, "South Asians for Biden" launched a digital ad campaign series featuring celebrities encouraging South Asians to vote blue."

"Author and filmmaker Gotham Chopra along with his father Deepak, sister and his niece, a first-time voter, put out their own video stumping for Biden and Harris. We all, three generations, feel very strongly about the stakes of this election and decided to participate in it, said Chopra."

Why are you supporting the Biden-Harris ticket?
I'm supporting the Biden-Harris ticket because they offer an opportunity for real positive change. They believe in science, they understand that America is hurting right now, and they have a plan to take action.

Why do you think Americans should support Biden for President?
Our country has become so deeply divided. We need a president who will promote unity and help us overcome our differences, not one who seeks to further divide us. Biden understands that his presidency could not only heal our country, but also serve as a transitional presidency to pass our country's politics down to the younger generations.

Why do you think a Biden-Harris ticket is best for U.S.-foreign relations?
Former Vice President Biden understands that we have a responsibility to lead by example and hold other global powers accountable. As he said in the debates last night, countries like China, Russia, and North Korea need to be held accountable for their actions, we can no longer let them go unchecked. He also understands that it is important to maintain our relationships with our allies. Biden has laid out a really thoughtful plan on what he will do for the Indian-American community, and our current president isn't thinking of ways to help our immigrant communities, instead, he seeks to marginalize them further. A Biden-Harris ticket is the positive change we need.

Why are you supporting the Biden-Harris ticket?
I am supporting the Biden-Harris ticket because it is more than apparent to me that this country needs a change. If the events of this year have shown us anything, it is that the current status quo is not sustainable nor desirable for anyone, whether they admit it or not. Electing Joe Biden would be a step in the right direction to create the changes that need to happen in our society. Real progress can only be made by the citizens if the leaders of our country are committed to it as well, which is what the current administration is lacking. We need a president who has the best interest of the American people as their first priority, and as we have seen throughout the various crises of this year, our current president simply does not.

Why do you think Indian Americans should support Biden?
Indian Americans have a lot to gain from a Biden led administration, and, perhaps more importantly, a lot to lose from the alternative outcome. Supporting Biden is an investment into our own future as Indian Americans, to continue to grow our community as a prosperous and capable one. With Joe Biden as president, Indian Americans would be treated as a crucial and positive asset to our country. We would be properly represented in the highest of political roles and our contributions to this country would be acknowledged and celebrated. We would not be treated as outsiders or diversity tokens, but as citizens.

Why are you supporting the Indians for Biden National Council?
Because of the dire nature of this year's election, I felt more of an urgency and responsibility than ever before to get involved in any way I could. Through Indians for Biden National Council, I found a way to participate in an impactful manner within my own community. Indians for Biden gives a voice to those of our specific demographic to show their support for the Biden-Harris ticket, and encourages others to do the same while keeping Indians updated and informed during this turbulent election cycle, and I find it meaningful to be a part of this.
