Kneemail from Saint James Church

October 21, AD 2020

Dear Friends and Parishioners of Saint James' Church:

I met Fran on my first day as Rector of St. James’ Church in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Westwood. This was 1 November 2006.  He was a long-time member of St. James and a faithful churchman.  Fran was also fighting advanced prostate cancer, and had been doing so for several years. Over the next 13 months Fran and I prayed, laughed, and cried together as he underwent treatment.

I can still remember the late-night call in December the following year asking me to come to his home to administer the Last Rites of the Church,  and sitting with Fran throughout that  night and early morning hours. As we talked that early morning, he made two requests of me to which I agreed: 1) was to not follow his example and ignore my health, but to take care of it, and have the prostate screening done yearly when I came of age; 2) that I would remind the men of the parish, and any parish I might serve, to do the same.

So, during the week of my own birthday each year, I honor Fran and respectfully remind the men of the parish to schedule your annual physical and exams, if you have not done so.

And as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I would like to remind the women of the parish to schedule your annual physical and exams as well.

Let us also not forget to continue our prayers for those who fight these diseases, for those whose lives are committed to finding a cure, and for the discovery of a cure.

Blessings,

PS… I am heading to Illinois this weekend to close on the house there.  I will truly miss being with you all on Sunday, but will see you “online”.

ITEMS OF PARTICULAR NOTE

All Soul’s Mass (Commemoration of the Faithful Departed) will be held at 5:30 PM on 2 November.  Please inform the office of any names you wish to be remembered at that Mass.  The names will be read during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

Sunday School for all ages will resume on 1 November.  The adult topic will be “A Life in Prayer”.  The children’s session on 1 November will be instruction on serving at the Altar.  On the 8th a regular cycle of classes for youth and children will begin using Sparkhouse curriculum. Sunday School meets at 9 a.m.

A Brisket Picnic will be offered after the 10 a.m. Mass on 1 November.  Weather permitting we will gather in the garden, on the lawn, and anywhere else we can to celebrate All Saints and Stewardship Sunday. Please remember your stewardship cards, and your appetite, that day. Take away will also be available for those who cannot stay, or feel more comfortable worshipping, and eating, at home.

Thank you to those who continue to help with our streaming presence and for making this valuable ministry possible.  For this month we have had 2975 minutes/49.5 hours of viewing on the Facebook platform and 71 hours of viewing on You Tube for the past 28 days.  Thank you, as well, to all who faithfully worship with your Parish through this offering.

A Pizza and Movie night (for High School and Jr. High Youth) will be held on Sunday November 8th after the 5:30 PM service.  All youth and friends are invited.
