Amended Tree Warden Statutes

New legislation has been passed to modernize Vermont's tree warden statutes and other state statutes related to public trees and roadside vegetation. Act 171 was signed into law by Governor Scott earlier this month and goes into effect November 1, 2020. The updated statutes represent several years of effort and broad agreement among stakeholders with a diversity of interests and perspectives.

In the coming months VT UCF Program staff will be implementing a plan to support Vermont communities and tree wardens in understanding and adhering to the new statutes.  We will be updating online resources, seeking pilot municipal partners to develop shade tree preservation plans, and collaborating with the Vermont League of Cities and Towns to create new guidance.

Right-of-Ways Guide Now Available

Resilient Right-of-Ways: A guide to community stewardship of Vermont backroads is the culmination of a collaborative approach to better understand and care for forests, individual trees, and other vegetation along Vermont backroads. Informed by 200 miles of rural roadside assessments and input from over 60 local volunteers and municipally focused professionals, this guide was developed by UCF's Joanne Garton and provides information to support community priorities and plans of action for backroad vegetation.

Planting for Impact: Energy Saving Trees

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Association of State Foresters,  VT UCF partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, the Brattleboro Tree Advisory Board, and the Bradford Conservation Commission to give away 100+ trees to residents of Brattleboro and Bradford in September. Learn more about the Energy Saving Trees Program.

A BIG THANK YOU to our volunteers who helped make this a successful, safe, and socially distanced event!
