“You Are Not Alone”: Messages of Solidarity with the Armenian People

“It was an evening of deep consolation for me, and for all our people, to see these profound figures of prayer standing with us—with the Armenian Church, and with our people in Armenia and Artsakh,” said Bishop Daniel, following the October 21 ecumenical service at St. Vartan Cathedral.

“These were the leaders of the Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Episcopal, and many other church traditions in America, showing solidarity with the Armenian Church and its ancient Christian heritage,” the Primate added. “It was a rare occasion, and profoundly moving to witness.”

Indeed, a spirit of support and common purpose was powerfully on display in the formal remarks of the evening.

“We are here at St. Vartan Cathedral this evening to help,” pleaded Catholic Archbishop of New York Cardinal Dolan. “You are not alone…. The shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit: that’s our artillery; that’s our strategy.”

Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Church eloquently stated: “Today, we continue to pray for the Armenian people, that they may continue to cherish their historic land and sacred sanctuaries.”

“The suffering of the Armenian people is our own suffering,” said Bishop David of the Coptic Orthodox Church, in emotional remarks that captured the spirit of clergy and worshippers alike.

Throughout this urgent time, the Eastern Diocese has appealed to people to act for the defense and preservation of Artsakh and Armenia. Here’s how:

(1) ADVOCATE: The Armenian Assembly of America and the Armenian National Committee are urging Congress and the Administration to condemn the Azeri aggression and demand its immediate cessation; to end U.S. financial aid to Azerbaijan; and to rein in Turkey from its military support of Azerbaijan. Both ANCA and the Assembly have made it easy for you to make your voice heard in support of these goals. Click these links to access their websites: ANCA.org and Armenian-Assembly.org. You can also take part in local and national public events in support of our homeland.

(2) DONATE: Armenia’s government is looking to the diaspora for financial as well as moral support. At the direction of the Primate, the Eastern Diocese will direct its fundraising efforts to Armenia Fund, with all American-Armenian organizations united in this approach. All funds collected will support civilian humanitarian aid. Contributions can be directed to the Armenia Fund, on its secure websites: ArmeniaFund.org and Himnadram.org. (Donations to the ArmeniaFund site are tax-deductible in the U.S.) You may also contribute by phone at (800) 888-8897.

(3) PRAY: Keep Artsakh, Armenia, and our people in your prayers. As our Primate stresses, "Calling on the name of the Lord is the most powerful weapon we have at our disposal.” May God attend to our heartfelt prayers, and continue to bless, protect, and strengthen our sacred homeland, its peace-loving citizens, and its courageous defenders.

Armenia: a conversation with Reverend Father Paren Galstyan of an Armenian Church in Florida.

Lord Jesus, please keep watch over your faithful people and the holy soil of Arstakh and Armenia, now and always.
Grant them strength and lead them through this time of trial to a victorious and just peace. Amen.

FAR Assists Artsakh Families in Need

During this time of war in our homeland, the Fund for Armenian Relief is continuing to bring emergency food, supplies, and shelter assistance to those who have fled Artsakh.

Typical of the people helped by FAR is the family of Lilia Davityan. She and her small children Gabriella and Aleksey left Stepanakert on September 27, after an Azeri shell landed close to their home. The family had to run to take shelter in a nearby bunker. Lilia’s husband, who joined the front line forces, insisted that his family evacuate.

Lilia’s grandparents, Raya and Albert Sargsyan, soon joined the family in Yerevan. They left Stepanakert in early October as the Azeri shelling of the city escalated. At one point, they had to shelter under a bridge and wait until the explosions stopped before they could proceed any further. The elderly couple is familiar with the pain of war and loss, having lost two sons in the late 1980s and early '90s. Now their third son, Vardan (age 45) and daughter Silva (47) are fighting to defend Artsakh.

The family of five now lives in a Yerevan hotel, which is providing free shelter and food to the displaced. Unable to pack even one suitcase before they left, the family was in need of clothing, diapers, and other essentials—which FAR is providing to them. Click the link to read more about the work FAR is doing during this difficult time in Armenia and Artsakh.
