Frog ID week is back!

FrogID Week, from November 6-15, is Australia’s Biggest Frog Count. Held annually by the Australian Museum’s FrogID citizen science program, it allows everyone take part and help scientists discover where frogs are most at risk from habitat loss, disease and climate change.

It’s so easy, anybody with a smartphone can contribute simply by downloading the free FrogID app from FrogID.net.au and recording the sound of frogs they hear calling.
Image sourced from the Australian Museum's FrogID project.
The FrogID records map shows the most commonly recorded frog species in the Shellharbour area include Peron’s Tree Frogs, Striped Marsh Frogs, Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs and Common Eastern Froglets. Frogs recorded just a few times in Shellharbour include Jervis Bay Tree Frogs, Stony Creek Frogs, Whistling Tree Frogs, Southern Green Stream Frogs and Bleating Tree Frogs. Taking part in FrogID Week will help provide our scientists with valuable data for the protection and conservation of frogs.

Visit FrogID.net.au to download the free FrogID mobile app and get recording!

Mayors commit to clean, local jobs

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba has joined forty mayors and councillors from across the country in releasing a joint statement committing to economic recovery solutions that create jobs and tackle climate change.

The mass commitment to a sustainable economic recovery aims to support industries and sectors that invest in a zero carbon future, along with driving strong economic recovery for communities hit hard by twin climate and COVID-19 crises.

The joint statement outlines eight solutions from renewable energy through to sustainable transport that put local governments on a practical, jobs-rich path to future-proof cities, reduce energy costs and create more comfortable homes and workplaces.
Recently 2,279 streetlights across Shellharbour City were replaced with more energy-efficient LED alternatives, reducing Council's annual greenhouse gas emissions by over 800 tCO2 per annum.
Shellharbour City Council joined the Cities Power Partnership in 2018, and in March 2019 selected the following five pledges to work towards achieving:

• Ensure Council fleet purchases meet strict greenhouse gas emissions requirements and support the uptake of hybrid and/or electric vehicles
• Provide fast-charging user pays infrastructure throughout the city at key locations for electric vehicles
• Set minimum energy efficiency benchmarks for all planning applications
• Adopt best practice energy efficiency measures across all Council buildings, and support community facilities to adopt these measures
• Install solar power on council buildings.
