"God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done."
- Anonymous -

It's something like that. We've had what seems like a lot of rain lately; 2.5" so far this month, and it's rained five of the preceding seven days, and it's raining today. Rain tends to put a damper on outside work, including milling, so quite a bit of time has been spent in the Sugar House, dressing Pure Maple Syrup bottles for sale. There's always something to do, and quite often more than can be done, which as far as I'm concerned is a good problem to have.
Lumber stacked for air drying

Primal Woods

Despite the rain we did squeeze in a milling job this past Tuesday. It was a great pleasure working with Scott up near Holland, and we put quite of bit of 6/4 and 9/8 Maple boards on the stack. Monday skies were clear long enough to prepare for the milling, and Tuesday was the only other day we were able to work outside for any significant length of time.
Milling set-up, log loaded, squared up and cutting lumber
Portable Sawmill Services A relatively short trip of about an hour each way was involved in the Holland job, which made for a nice day. All photos of the lumber and milling are courtesy of Scott, our customer. I left him with some Pure Maple Syrup and a few of my favorite serving suggestions. I usually start with "don't put it on anything resembling a sponge," but that advice usually falls on deaf ears; perhaps rightfully so. Ha! We spent a bit of time moving the logs into position, but after getting them loaded on the mill the Wood-Mizer made short work of cutting the lumber.

Order ready for UPS pickup last year
Pure Maple Syrup Last year we were truly blessed with a large Pure Maple Syrup order from Roger; it made our year. And thankfully, we are preparing again to satisfy this order. If you are at the front end of a business serving clients, our Pure Maple Syrup tasting flight is a perfect holiday gift. We handle everything, including drop shipment to the customers; it's as easy as replying to this eNewsletter to get the ball rolling.
Fortunately I have the newly converted north side of the Sugar House available for the purpose of dressing Pure Maple Syrup bottles for shipment. The north side is not 100% complete, but it is certainly functional, and a real improvement in the syrup operation. Meanwhile other preparations for the upcoming season are in progress.

Say hello to Maple, our most recent rescue...
Lifestyle It's safe to say that Geri spearheads our animal rescue "operations;" two dogs and four cats to date, Maple being the most recent addition to the menagerie. She's in the crate until she figures out how to use the litter box. No doubt Geri is doing good, and in a way she loves. Aside from feeling good about rescuing animals though, there is apparently more to it than that for the human hosts. According to this Center for Health Research article, The Benefits of Pets for Human Health, "Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, asthma, social support, and social interactions with other people." Works for us. I can't say we went into this with our health in mind, but we'll be grateful for the benefits nonetheless.
In closing...  This week seemed a bit less intense, but that might be because I've had to postpone some important outdoor work. The goat pen, follow-up to the goats in the pasture (with the brush hog), and firewood production, still require much work, only now on a shorter timeline. It will all be done and I won't lose any sleep worrying that it won't.

All the best to you and yours, stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy the weekend,
John
