Remembrance 2020

Many hoped the pandemic would be a distant memory by Remembrance Sunday and that we would be able to commemorate and remember in our usual ways, however sadly this won’t be the case.

This year, many churches will be holding their Remembrance service online or to a smaller congregation either inside or outside the church.

Derby City Council recently issued an open letter confirming that they will not be organising a physical event this year and encouraged local partners to do the same.

If you are planning to hold a Remembrance event in your community, please do check with your local council / authority on their position and whether their approval is needed to hold such event.

Ways to commemorate Remembrance this year

The Diocese of Derby worship resilience group have shared some great ideas for how you can commemorate Remembrance.

National CofE Remembering and Remembrance website page

Derby City Remembrance Ceremony
The Derby City Remembrance ceremony will live streamed on Sunday, 8 November 2020 at 10.45am on the Derby City Council Facebook page.

National CofE Remembrance Sunday online service
This online service will be available on the Church of England website. It will be led by military chaplains and pays tribute to all those who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. it will also give thanks for the families and others who provide care and support.

This year, more than ever before, we should celebrate Remembrance and proudly say “We WILL remember them”.

A prayer for Remembrance

Loving God,
Thank you for all those who have shaped our lives,
but whom we no longer see.
Help us to remember them well,
and trust that they are
at peace with you.
Amen

Getting "Family Fit" over half-term

Family Fit is a series of videos specially made for the Diocese of Derby as part of the Bishop's Harvest Appeal 2020 and the commitment to supporting mental wellbeing in Derbyshire.

This series of five 20-minute, fun-themed family workouts, led by Kay Skinner, a CofE sports minister, will premier each morning during the October half term break at 9am. No special equipment needed - just make ample space for your family to move around while you follow Kay's classes.

This is a great way to get your family active, keep fit, do something together and, most importantly, help to look after your physical and mental wellbeing.

Announcements from the Bishop of Derby's office

Mr Edward Latham, Lay Chair of the deanery of Hardwick and formerly Lay Chair of the deanery of Alfreton, and Administrator of the Bishop of Derby’s Harvest Appeal for many years, died on Wednesday, 14 October 2020. The funeral took place on Wednesday, 21 October at St Leonard’s Shirland.

Following a review of staffing in the Bishop’s Office and after a period of consultation, Mrs Pippa Rowen, Chaplain (Lay) to the Bishop of Derby, will have her last working day in post on Friday, 30 October 2020. Pippa joined the Bishop’s staff in January 2011 and became an integral member of the team. She worked closely with Bishop Alastair around the issue of Modern Slavery and assisted him with research and in drawing up the Modern Slavery Bill which passed into law in 2015. Bishop Libby is very grateful for the support Pippa provided for her introduction to the Diocese last year, and her expert advice regarding public policy work. She knows you will want to join her in wishing Pippa well for the future.

The Revd Richard Law, Team Vicar in the North Wingfield, Clay Cross and Pilsley Team Minister, with special responsibility Clay Cross and Danesmoor, has announced his retirement. Mr Law’s last day in post will be Monday, 30 November, with his retirement taking effect from Tuesday, 1 December, 2020. Mr Law will move away from the diocese in retirement.

Convent items for sale

The Community of the Holy Name, based in Oakwood, are moving to Hessle near Hull. A number of large church items from around the convent, e.g. crucifixes, lecterns etc are being sold as they are simply too big for the new house.

The sisters are hoping to pass them on to those who will appreciate them and help enhance worship.
