How are some ways that anti-Blackness presents itself in America and in non-Black communities of color? How does this relate to the ways in which we interact with each other in medical school? Join us for reflection and small group dialogue. Anti-Black RacismUp first we will focus on
All medical schools are welcome - staff, faculty, leadership and students. Active participation is encouraged. Starting in November, if you bring at least one additional colleague or peer to the Chats for Change, you can enter a raffle to win an award-winning book of your choice on racism and bias. We will announce details during the Chats for Change on October 30th.
The November Chats for Change will explore Decentering Whiteness. What would it take for white culture to displace itself from the center? Moving whiteness out of the center is an ambitious and necessary goal that will require us to develop strategies and tactics in the service of making the transition. Join us to share and identify strategies and tactics that can be used in medical school.
Like all Chats for Change, come ready to engage in a racial dialogue (structured, public conversations about race and racism). By participating, we offer an opportunity for you to explore who you are in relation to others while creating a space for you to reflect on your own and others’ social location and group membership. Even though the conversation is structured, the expectation is that you express yourself from your own lived experience.

The CUNY School of Medicine Physicians for Human Rights chapter is proud to be hosting this year’s annual Physicians for Human Rights National Student Conference! Our theme this year is Defending Human Rights in the Age of the Pandemic. Mark your calendars: we will be virtually hosting the conference on Friday, November 20th - Saturday, November 21st! We have a very exciting conference program planned! We hope this FREE virtual conference can serve as an opportunity for all of us to deepen our collective human rights knowledge & to strengthen our advocacy toolbox!

At 5pm, our very own Dr. Victoria Frye will be moderating a discussion with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed on COVID-19, Healthcare, and Social Disparities. Dr. Abdul is a physician, epidemiologist, public health expert, and progressive activist who is a frequent contributor on CNN!
Interested in pediatrics? At 6pm, Dr. Katherine Peeler from Harvard/Boston Children’s Hospital will be hosting a session on COVID-19’s Impact on Children (and the role of student advocacy!)
Saturday, November 21st
Our main day of the conference will kick off at 9am with opening remarks and introductions by our own Dr. Holly Atkinson and staff from PHR National
At 9:30am, Janine di Giovanni, multi-award-winning journalist and author, will speak about Moral Injury from her perspective as a decades-long war correspondent covering some of the most brutal and soul-injuring conflicts in recent history
At 10:30am, Dr. Wendy Dean, founder of https://fixmoralinjury.org, will focus the conversation and speak on Moral Injury in Medicine (especially during the pandemic!)
At 11:25am we’ll wrap up the morning with Dr. Jacques J. Morcos, who will be sharing his incredible story and reflections, published recently: Brief encounters that last a lifetime: an immigrant neurosurgeon’s reflections on American exceptionalism, George Floyd, sunlight, and race
Then, we’ll have three blocks of time for breakout sessions, in which students can choose which session to attend in each block depending on their interests (remember, all will be recorded!)

Censorship & Uyghur Muslims in China
From 2:45pm-3:45pm, PHR National will be moderating a panel on Attacks on Healthcare, Treatment of Healthcare Workers, & COVID-19’s Impact on Global Healthcare Systems
From 4:00pm-5:30pm, PHR National will be hosting a session highlighting some of their recent work, including the use of Crowd Control Weapons by U.S. Law Enforcement, Targeting of Medics and Peaceful Protestors at BLM Protests, and any issues that may arise relating to post-election safety and civil unrest
Finally, from 5:30-6:00pm, we’ll wrap up this long day with a virtual training for those interested. Remembering the Opioid Epidemic: anyone interested in receiving a virtual Naloxone Opioid Overdose Prevention Training can do so!

We are excited to announce the 2021 Health Equity Ophthalmology Summer Program at the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan for medical students during the summer between their M1 and M2 year. Details of the program are attached to this email.
This program is intended for students passionate in the area of health equity in Ophthalmology and medicine in general. There is a $2500 stipend provided to participating students. We are now accepting applications. Dates of the program are flexible given different school calendars.
Please share with your medical students and encourage them to apply by January 11, 2021.
