 SHAPE THE FUTURE AT REDHILLS

Redhills: Durham Miners Hall opened 105 years ago today - on 23 October 1915.

The pennies and ha’pennies contributed by Durham's miners paid for this unique expression of working-class democracy, pride, confidence, and power.

Thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are progressing plans for the restoration and renewal of Redhills.

Please see below for how we'd like you to get more deeply involved in the future of the magnificent Miners Hall.

You may recall that the last time we were in touch we asked for your help in writing a new manifesto for the Miners Hall. We were overwhelmed with the volume and quality of responses, with hundreds of people taking time to provide us with invaluable insight. Our work on drafting the manifesto is ongoing but we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you a short summary of the powerful messages we received:

  • The challenges of deprivation and inequality facing Coalfield communities are akin to those they faced a century ago
  • Our communities have been left behind, marginalised and demoralised
  • Young people, in particular, have become dislocated from society and detached from their own heritage and identity
  • The DMA founders’ principles, values and purpose are as relevant today as ever
  • There is a powerful, deep-seated, but latent sense of identity and solidarity across the Coalfield that could be rekindled
  • The spirit of the Durham Miners Gala could be harnessed to spark a programme of year- round community activity

Above all we heard from you that a modern version of the DMA could be a living legacy that would honour our founders, give Redhills a real purpose and empower Coalfield communities once again.

Once again, we thank you for taking the time to share such a rich and diverse range of reflections on our questions.

To help us with the next phase of our project we would like to ask for your help once again, this time in completing a questionnaire that helps us understand you better - and gives you the opportunity to sign up to join an advisory panel for the next phase of the project.

Thank you as always for your ongoing interest in, and support for our work to renew Redhills for future generations.

The past we inherit; the future we build. Together.
